Currently it's not bad but I'm planning on going to a smaller steering wheel and a tighter rack so we'll see... I might decide to bring the power steering back.

Got a few more things sorted tonight.

        First, the bad...

I took the car to the local coin-op to spray off the grime (haven't corrected the paint yet, so not overly concerned with not hand washing at the moment), and the pesky leak reared it's ugly head again. GRRR

Got the car home and ripped out the rear seat so that I could get to the bottom of things. I had my neighbor friend come over and hose water onto the hood area while I watched from inside. Luckily, we narrowed down the leak to this rusted hole. This is where the trunk latch welds on from underneath (I think).

I noticed that the hole on the other side had already been sealed up. I used some RTV Black silicone on it. Once it dries, I'll do some more water testing. What happens is, water leaks through this hole surprisingly fast, leaks down the inside of the trunk and follows the wiring harness all the way up to the rear passenger foot area. I really think I've solved the leak this time! Phew.

        In other news.... I....

*Lubricated all hood latches/hinges/springs and it now operates very quietly. I am always amazed at what a little WD40 and Lithium grease can do.

*Drained transmission oil - HOLY SHIT was the old stuff nasty. It was also slightly low, since the rear transmission seal is leaking pretty badly. I'll fill it up with MTL tomorrow.

*Degreased the transmission and undercarriage using WD-40 degreaser

*Changed engine oil. After many hours of oil reading on the forums, I decided on some Mobil 1 10w40 Hight Mileage. I went with that weight due to the temperatures here and I am OK with this specific synthetic because it still has high levels of zinc (comparable to conventional oil). I have a Mahle oil filter on order, but threw in a mobil 1 filter for this run.

*For good measure, sucked out the power steering fluid one more time and filled with new. It's pretty fresh now and should be good for a while.

*I also noticed that the shift lever seal is leaking pretty badly, and the bushings look shot. SOOOO... my next project will be this:

Overall, it was a good day. I'll be glad to get all of this sorted and the interior put back together. Looking forward to the next Cars and Coffee meet.

Good choice on the oil. That's my weight of choice in Colorado, too.

            '90 325i Project Log… continued

            The saga continues...

            First the good...

Added redline mtl to the trans and noticed a nice improvement in shift smoothness. It's even more glaringly obvious now that the shift lever bushings are cashed. I'll be doing that this summer.

Unfortunately, the trans did not take 2 full bottles of mtl. Well, it did, because that's how much I poured in, but it started spewing it out like a sieve. Luckily I had tarp down, but just a heads up that it's more like 1.5+ qts, not 2. No biggie. She is now full :)

I tested my water leak fix and all is good. Doesn't appear to be any leaks now. Phew! At some point I need to replace the rear passenger side taillight seal... Maybe both for good measure.

Onto other news, I had a long/hard start today. Luckily I have not yet returned my fuel pressure tester, so I tested fuel pump check valve and pressure held. Tore apart injectors and tested them for leaks... Dry as a bone. Capped off regulator and pressure held. But when I allowed regulator to regulate, pressure immediately dropped. So my new, Bosch fpr is intermittently bleeding off pressure, leading to occasional hard starts. Thanks to amazon prime return policy and free one-day shipping upgrade, the new fpr will be here Thursday. Just in time for weekend.

Next Friday I am hoping to take the car to my mechanic so that we can throw the car up on his lift and listen for the buzzing noise. My money is on csb or one of the front wheel bearings. Definitely sounds like noise is coming from the back though. Hopefully it's something stupid/simple. But if the csb needs replaced I am not too worried about that.

besides those few things, the car is flippin minty fresh. Love it.

Today I lubricated the driver seat lever and track. Moves much smoother now and locks into place.

I also lubricated both door hinges, so no more squeak.

I cleaned and treated the rear seat with leather conditioner again. Wow what a difference. I also threw another coat on the front seats.

              Top vs bottom

And since this console did not have a provision for window lockout, I made one on the driver side

Isnt there a lockout button on the dash? Mine has one next to the rear window defrost? ( the very left button)

It can. But you can put whatever kind of switch you desire there.

Early model cars have it in the dash and late model have it in the console.

jd_e30, your car is a late model (obviously) but has an early model console.
