e30 325ix-86: with a Finnish touch

Made a new build thread where I reserved some space at beginning for my writings.

So the story begins..
I bought the car in february, 2008, from germany.


the picture has been taken at the parking lot at hotel lübeck ;)

Gave it full check and clean up when I got it home.


those low offset mahle bbs were rubbin hard with meaty setup as 205/55

so I got some 17's to get rid of rubbing

Gave them paint and they were pretty decent, wasn't 100% sure for the way they looked


Good day to install better sound system :P








Got thirsty for getting more hp's and there the long journey starts.

Shrick 288 from germany.

new 731 head for the stroker build.

got some m57 cranks with 88mm stroke for cheap. "failed swirl flaps"

Got myself into Tampere University of Applied Sciences and started studying automotive and transportation.

First touch into 3d modelling and printing and I started making Itb's for it.

First 3d model printed for test fitting.


Took the transfer case off because loose chain




new chain on its place


found little wear on the front output shaft


Took classes in the evening in another school and studied myself another profession, CNC machinist

designed front output shaft uppgrade with grease nipple and machined it out.






welded it on on turning table








ready for installation


started planning 5-lug swap with brake uppgrade.

googled and found out that e87 has pretty decend hub for my use.

at the time I also started making coilover setup for it. used my dad's coilover setup for measuring


rear setup coming along. stock ix vs e87 hub + e36 rotor




required some spacer to bring it little outer to make clearance for the hand brake




cleaned front control arms to meet new damper pipes.

So heating problems started to come on...



started fitting electrical fan and bigger radiator.




My first touch on tig welding :)
















time to swap manifold










took part in car show with my friend. he had the datsun 280z













Car continued overheating and I decided to leave it wait engine pulling out.

So I started dropping the engine with transmission.

some used m54 rods and pistons for the test fit


















took measurement of the m54 piston and gave it a little modifications.

So back to cylinder heads.
I bought all the types of head: 200, 731 and 885.


started running flowbench tests to see comparation between years.

couple of 3d printed models I made to work out the clearance problem with the brake booster.

Right way to check manifold fitment ;)






Made a tapered press tool from 35mm to 45mm ;)



and finding a correct shape begins.

so I started making flanges for the dellorto/weber carburetors ;)


measuring the outer diameter.


close enough. I'll take it.

enlarged the inner diameter to 44,8mm. will finish it upto 45mm by hand.

So the flanges came out nicely. started fitting into my custom manifold

So yesterday I started porting practises with the cracked 731 head.


valve seat for 42mm intake and took the edge off.

So I got my 3D model ready. going to use weber/dellorto bolt pattern if I will ever go back to 80's and start playing with carbs ;)

Still needs engine rebuilt. last engine gave 214hp from 2.0 ohc

How do you manage to get the incredible MIG-welds?
