    1970 BMW Gruppe 2 2002 (M20B29 Turbo) Build

Some progress has been made, got some new parts I had paid for a ways back, but holidays got my funds low.
Installed the Ground Control Adjustable Rear Coils. 450 lb spring rate

I need to change the studs on the rear hubs because they are too short for spacers to fill the flares. That castle nut was a big SOB. I tried a 20V Lithium Impact that did 350 ft lbs and a corded crafstman impact, and a 25" breaker bar with me bouncing on it. No luck. The trick is to invite your friend over and you and him both bounce on the end of the breaker bar holding your 45 lb dumbell weights lol. That is how much torque it takes.

In order to keep the hub from spinning I had to install one of the front wheels that had a tire on it + the parking brake.

I cant wait to get some rubber on the 15x10's :)

The passenger side drum was stuck on it so I started smacking it with the 3 lb sledge and the whole hub/drum slid off haha.

Driver side didn't come off the same way :(

Gotta get a puller for this guy.

    Stud length difference

They press in from the back.

I wanted to continue with the front suspension, but I dont have an argon tank or helmet to weld with my TIG yet. So I put the subframe in the vette and went to a friends house to use his MIG to reinforce the subframe

Was a PITA to clean and degrease 46 years worth of oil leak + driving.

Used the IE subframe plate. That needed some massaging to fit. Nothing a 5 lb sledge cant fix.

I didnt feel it was necesarry to weld all the way across. Didn't wanna warp anything by putting that much heat into it.

But I stitched it pretty big all the way around.
Same with this piece. Figured this could warp easy.

Then I used some Self Etching primer, Some heavy duty rustoleum pro paint, and did some heavy coats

    Leaving it to dry

In between coats I decided it was time to use the angle grinder some more to start cutting the radiator support out :)

    First piece out

The more I cut, the easier it looked like the M20 was going to fit :)

After I made a ton of noise I decided it was getting too late to keep cutting. I'll continue this week.

    Called it quits Here

So I finished up the cutting of the radiator support area for plenty of room for the intercooler, piping and thick z3m triple pass radiator. Should be plenty of room now :)

I want everything to look clean and kinda shave the bay. So I ground it to a corner. I will prob TIG that corner and grind it down. Newbie at body work. So all this is new to me

                Frontal view. Plenty of room
Now :) going to make a radiator support bar that bolts to the flat panels there. Will prob weld a 1/8" plate or something as well to reinforce. Haven't thought this through 100% yet.

Also digging through boxes looking for parts. I found the original roundels for My car. They are aluminum, not plastic. Thought it was pretty sweet! Why isn't stuff made like it used to? I found the hood roundel as well. Just put the drill gun away and didn't wanna pull it out again to mount it. I drilled a slightly smaller hole and hammered the roundel in :). Next to my German plates I brought back that Mike gave me when I visited him.

I think I'm gonna polish them out for fun :)

awesome work! I had an early 2002 project. I got as far as disassembling an extra m10, then I sold it all. I don't regret it, though, the front cowl was demolished by rust, but the struts were clean.

I'm lucky, no rust here yet that a wire wheel doesn't blast off in a sec. It's just some surface rust here and there. Gotta love California cars. The worst area is the rocker panel and the pedal box. Might have to do a little more than wire wheel it there.

                          1970 BMW Gruppe 2 2002 (M20B29 Turbo) Build

Got some progress done. My dad gave me a Dewalt chop saw so I went and got a metal blade quick :) started measuring to convert the struts to coilovers.

Make one cut 3" from The top of the strut.

                          Then you're here

Then I measured 12.75" from the bottom of the strut.

                          Which gets me to here

Here's my ghetto rigged set up.
                          But it worked haha :)

Repeat for the second strut. Then you'll be ready to weld!

Tacked up the provided perch from Ireland Engineering sleeve kit.

                          Laid the first bead

Then finished it all around top and bottom.

Was cool, there was smoke in the bottom of the strut hat wouldn't come out. Guessing cause of the heat?

Here are the struts done. Pretty pleased with the outcome. Surprising myself.

                          Cleaned and primed them.

                          Then got them some paint

And slid on the adjustable collars...

I just need the spacers for the strut inserts then I can finish assembling the coilovers.

But here's a sneak peak when I test fitted before paint.

                          Will finish once spacers arrive.

Also started re assembling the front suspension.

Pressed out the new rubber bushings in the arms because I will be using Ireland Engineering polyurethane.

Put primer on these control arm rod things too. What are these called lol?

Here's a new arm vs old arm. Old arms had poly bushings that are actually still good.

                            Both arms

After those were done decided to clean up and "refinish" the hardware.

Wire wheels are awesome. Grimy to clean
                            Then gave them all paint.

While that was drying I decided to start removing the chassis wiring harness. Got it all disconnected and confined to the corner. Then decided the booster had to come out too.

I managed to pull it off in one piece. First I removed the bolts of the pedal box. Found some rust...

I've got some cleaning to do in here as well. Sound deadening was not removed well. And some rust repair :(

But it came off with some Finagling. Gotta clean this thing back up and make sure it's working. Will get e21 MC for a cleaner install. (Single vs dual line)

Now the bay is ready to be shaved and worked on.

This is where I left off.

                              1970 BMW Gruppe 2 2002 (M20B29 Turbo) Build

Now that I got my daily back in order, I worked on the 02 some more because I got the parts I needed from IE,

Strut insert spacer for the bottom of the strut.

                              Pop these bad boys in...

Then slip your shock in, springs, and camber plates and you have your coilovers! I need to get gland nuts for the struts.

                              I like em :)

Then I decided to tackle some of the surface rust from the brake fluid all over the firewall/passenger side frame rail/inner fender. What's the best method for this? I was using a 3" flap disc for a drill. It took me an hour or so to "shave" all the tabs and grind a majority of the surface rust. Is this just always a lot Of work haha?

Pulled tabs for wire harness and ground off surface rust spots.

                              Drivers side

                              Passenger side

Got some good surface rust all over
My pedal box and booster assembly as well.

I would tackle any surface rust with a wire wheel on a drill. You can get them from harbor freight and they're super cheap, plus they'll last you forever. Then just hit with some primer to make sure it doesn't rust again.
