A few weeks ago I took more stuff off the engine.

      Water Pump and thermostat housing:

      Oil filter housing removed:

Gasket wasn't in bad condition, feels like the engine can have 74k on it:

      Lots of crap to clean:

      Old thermostat housing gasket:

I got an old TV setup to make this engine refresh even more enjoyable.

Removing the intake manifold. Took out the injectors to get rebuilt

        Started cleaning this:

About to remove the harness. I'm sticking with ODB2. It's an auto harness, good bye! :finger::

        The end of another session:

I highly recommend BMWstone for the injector rebuild.

Couple weeks ago I got the water pump, water pump pulley, 80c thermostat and thermostat housing installed.

Also changed out the VANOS oil line since it's very convenient to do right now:

            Installed the oil filter housing:

Stuff to install with new bolts.

Water pump installed. I also purchased a screw on cap for where the fan would normally screw on. It's a nice touch.:

            Thermostat and thermostat housing installed:

I then tested my cleaning method that I'm going to use for the whole engine of various brushes and SuperClean (which was highly recommend on here) on this very dirty part of the engine.

            Before:

            After

;D I'm VERY happy with how that came out.

At the end of another session:

            Before cleaning that area:

                    Here's the last couple weeks.

Header removal and a good cleaning.

                    What I started out with:

No studs got stuck into the engine. Engine was filthy:

After a little cleaning session. Not finished yet:

Cleaned up the A/C compressor bracket and pretty much every piece of exposed metal I could get my brush into that wouldn't possibly damage something:

It's looking a lot better. There's a huge improvement on the oil filter housing.

Since there isn't much information on here about cleaning an engine or anywhere on the internet that doesn't involve completely dissembling an engine. Here's what I went with that gave me these results:

                      91 318is Brilliantrot - A lot to refresh - Restomod - M52 swap - Luchini, thi...

Last weekend I did the valve cover and got my injectors back from www.bmwstone.com:

My injectors were in very good condition but I'm very happy that they are still rebuilt. I'm also happy that this shows me the engine does have low miles.

                      Before:

                      After:

At this point I know the engine def has 7x,000 miles on it! Good shit!!

Super clean valve cover, this was as soon as I popped it off. The gaskets were still good, there weren't brittle at all:

                      Removing the old one:

After a lot of cleaning around the gasket seals and blowing the cover out with compressed air:

No finished pictures. I have some more stuff coming in the mail. I don't have much left to do.

I don't regret it too much but I had my heart set from last year on getting the car there this year with a new engine. The M42 is shot, going to the grocery store is nerve-racking

                          I'm in Phoenix. Lol, Bro-fest = Bimmerfest?

I want to do S52 cams but I'm going to have to wait on that, I don't feel confident in my abilities to swap something like that right now. I have an M50 manifold in my garage but I need to wait on more funds to purchase the mani swap kit :)

                            Did some work last night:

Did the intense and very interesting job of replacing the oil filter and o-ring with a MANN filter (Which is OEM from what I can see)

                            Now for some good stuff:

New studs and gaskets in, all OEM.:

Cleaned my headers with a wire brush to prep them for wrapping: Left one hasn't been cleaned, the right one is finished.:

I wanted to wrap my motorcycle exhaust so I bought some extra to wrap my stock M52 headers:

Time to get this thread up to date. A lot has been done. Nothing that hasn't been seen before.

Took the M42 out of the car with a good friend. That was fun to do.

                              So dirty. So worn.

                              ----------------------------------------------------

The engine bay was as expected, filthy. The engine leaked a lot of oil over it's 250,000 miles of use.

                              ----------------------------------------------------

I started to clean the engine bay with Simple Green, rags/paper towels and nylon brushes. I really wanted to power wash the engine bay but with all the oil on it I didn't want to mess up the driveway or the road in front of the house. I'll do a power wash once the engine is in and running right to get the hard to reach areas.

                              Cleaned

                              --------------------------------------------------

Got my VAC baffle put in. There was a lot of modification involved for something costing $150. Right around that time a thread popped up with the same issues: http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=387332

                              --------------------------------------------------
Took out the E36 rack to remove the front subframe. Purchasing a clean, reinforced one from Garagistic. The previous owner used washers. I purchased a spacer kit.

Purchased a Urethane Steering Coupler from Ireland Engineering. Good kit but taking out my very worn steering coupler was a bitch. Spent a couple hours on this.

Had to use a puller to get the rivets out once they were cut:

                              --------------------------------------------------
                              Removed the M52 oil pan.

                              Cut this off:

Cleaned off the threads and loctite'd the oil pump nut. Then safety wired the oil pump nut. I didn't have tools to do this and it was my first time doing it. Hope this holds, I think it will. *For those who don't know it is reverse threaded, that's why the wire is oriented that way.

New BMW seal of the oil level unit:

                              --------------------------------------------------
Got a new subframe from Garagistic. Front control arm, sway bar and engine mount reinforcement. New bolts as well.

                              --------------------------------------------------
I got a new ATE Porsche 944 booster. Followed this guide: https://www.rjnunnally.com/how-to-fi...ter-to-an-e30/

Done, with new foam that goes between the booster and the chassis. Details.

Installed along with a new ATE E32 (p/n 34311156643) master cylinder and a new reservoir.

                              --------------------------------------------------
Changed out some rubber bits and springs on the pedals. Not all pictured.

                              --------------------------------------------------

Tried installing a front UUC sway bar. The subframe bolts do not fit through the brackets. Talked to someone at UUC about it on the phone, he was a complete, ignorant, asshole. Made a separate thread for that. http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=389778
                              Went with Ireland Engineering brackets.

Two weeks ago it was time to take the engine off the stand and get the clutch/flywheel, pilot bearing and new rear main seal installed on the engine.

Rear main seal time. ECS has a kit, with BMW parts, put together that is nice. New bolts as well.

New BMW pilot bearing about to get pushed in:

This engine was mated to an auto transmission so it didn't come a manual flywheel. After reading a lot of reviews on the UUC flywheel and after the customer service I and others have received, I decided to roll the dice and get one of those eBay F1 flywheel/clutch kits. Afterall I needed a flywheel and didn't want to drop $$$ on a dual mass flywheel.

I got a lighter flywheel but didn't opt to get the lightest one they have available. Also got a Sachs pressure plate and clutch to go with it.

Didn't have a tool to lock the flywheel so I used the old automatic flywheel to lock it. Worked well!

                                Blue loctite'd and torqued!

                                -------------------------------------------------

I went to put in my AKG M/S5x engine swap mounts in happy that an easy job was ahead of me but the reinforcement holes were off on my subframe. :letitout: I could not get the 17mm socket in there. Very upset I set to work with my dremel and crappy sanding/material removal attachments to remove some metal from both sides. It took about 45 minutes. I don't have any after pictures but the motor mounts are now in.
