Sounds like at least 3 boosted cars there...

Work is progressing:
It was running great, so logically I pulled the engine.
The engine was assumed to be rebuilt and the plan was to slap a new gasket and studs on it. Upon pulling the head, I found some not so ideal surfaces and decided to send it out. After complete disassembly I found almost everything was original parts. Oil pump, bearings, rings, 10/12 rockers, 3 rocker shafts, 22/24 valve springs, and 12 eccentrics - all worn out of spec and tossed in the trash. To top it all off, the block was cracked at one head bolt hole and 2 other steam holes. Coolant-to-coolant passage so probably not doing any harm but I've got three blocks... and they're all cracked
Now this one was cracked the least! Well least critical.. Looks like someone dropped it on the oil return channel - thanks.
Ground it out - and gave it the JB weld. I give it a 90% success rate.
The block is now currently in the shop getting a hone, line hone, deck, and ARP mains.
On to the head:
Pesky coolant leak
0.004 skim and valve job
Up next, I wait for the block to return.. and work on the engine bay.

I like how "classic" it is

I always have wondered why the location of the air intake was positioned right over the exhaust manifold. Seems like that could potentially get really hot.

Y'all thought I forgot huh
Well there was a five month line at the machine shop..
So I bought a truck to keep me busy.
But its back! Decked 0.006/line hone/cylinder hone/rods checked/crank polished
This is a factory rebuild minus the ARP hardware.. with total of 0.010 removed the comp is probably a little over 9:1, stock goetze gasket. I didn't have the money to build this for boost so it will live a short life at 7-10psi untill it gets put in my E28 535 to live out its life NA (subsequently I will build the B34 for boost)
Sooooon

Oh no I’ve fallen so far behind in this thread.. I’ve injured my hand and I cannot wrench so I will share my progress with you.
Now back in time 8 months ago:
The finished engine mounts
Updated LR throttle body
My jetta broke so I found this gem in the meantime. What an upgrade. Needed the top end reseal, knock sensors and flex joint.
OOOOPS
22 psi on 9:1 comp with 91 oct..
Engine took it like a champ.
Ended up swapping pistons and [[hooking up the ******* wastegate]]
Back together just in time for bimmerfest.. Drove 1200 miles two weeks after blowing it up.
