The first 72 hours is that hardest, after that, it can be rough, but done.

I don't know Farbin, I always went nuts on the 7th or 8th day.

I quit about 12 years ago and haven't smoked since.

Don't try cold turkey. It has the lowest success rate.

Use the nicotine patch and taper down. Use nicotine gum as needed to get thru the rough spots.

        Avoid alcohol.

Take about a month and taper down.

Once you are nicotine free, put the money you would spend every day on cigs into a glass jar and when you have the urge to relapse, count the money in the jar.

I haven't had one in about three weeks now, got one of those electronic cigarettes that supply nicotine but none of the other stuff in smokes. It's been a piece of cake so far as you go through all the same motions and get the nicotine you need. I'll start using weaker nicotine level juices as I go along and eventually I won't need it anymore.

March 12, 2009, 5:11pm. Wanted to quit on my sons birthday but prices skyrocketed. So I quit early. Stay busy and you'll never remember why you started.

Every day I wake up we drink a lot of coffee and watch the CNN
Every day I wake up to a bowl of clover honey and let the locusts fly in.
            Lobsterbacks attack the town again
Wrap all my things in aluminum
Beams of darkness streak across the sky
Pink rays from the ancient satellite
Every time I look out my window same three dogs looking back at me.
Every time I open my windows cranes fly in to terrorize me.

I used Chantix when i quit and it worked great. Its been about 16 months since i've had one. Quitting anything is a mental battle, the biggest key, other than wanting to do it. Is to find something or some way to keep your mind off of it. I also believe thats where the pill came into play alot. My mental cravings were drastically less than previous quit attempts. Good luck though, you won't miss paying 5 or more dollars per pack!:)

You can do it. It's like giving up on letting Blunt blow you. After a while you wonder why you did it in the first place.

That's a good tip. I quit about 2 years ago for this reason and a couple others. It worked out for me like this:

I started a new job and I was the only smoker in the entire building. They did not allow smoke breaks so I would only be able to smoke on my lunch break. So right there; I went from like one an hour, to one or two in an eight hour span. It was tough at first, but I got used to it.

Also I started noticing the extra money each week, which was really reinforcing.

The final thing that allowed me to quit, was that I came down with a horrible cold. I was spitting up chunks of black shit everytime I would cough and I couldn't smoke a cig if I wanted to. This carried on for like a week, and I didn't touch a cig in that span. When I got better I noticed I had a week old, half empty, pack of cigs. Which were promptly thrown away.

I haven't bought a pack of cigs since 8/07 but I smoke one once and a while. Maybe like one every 3 or 4 weeks. I usually have to be at a bar with a bunch of other smokers for it to happen. But I have yet to relapse and I never have any cravings unless I have been drinking.

So yeah that's my quitting smoking story. Cold Turkey.

I read the allen carr book the easy way to stop smoking, really helped me out, even lets you keep smoking as you read it and tells you to

if your serious about quitting go to your doc and ask him for chantix, its a smoking cessation drug. how it works is it blocks your nicotine receptors, so if you do smoke you become sick as a dog. the sick feeling is what detours the habit of smoking. it really works 90% success rate. but it only works when some1 is truly ready to quit because if your not ready to quit you can stop the chantix and start smoking.
once your body doesn't crave the desire to smoke or changes its habit then you will find yourself not desiring to smoke.

edit: dam i read another poster's comments but yeh what he said use chantix, it the most effective.

Thats alot of great info. Glad to hear I'm not the only one. I know cold turkey is not the way to go, but I just keep telling myself I will survive. Today I took one puff off a smoke I bummed at lunch.....flipped my phone open and saw the pic I have of my kids and tossed it in the butt can. I woke up this morning and my chest felt like I inhaled a can of oven cleaner, but it seemed to subside after being up and around for a couple hours.....Other than that its just been rapid mood swings and these moments when I feel really light headed. Patience went from well lemme think about this to I'll just smash the fukker..then it will be apart.....so the boss was keeping an eye on me today....almost like a shaporone. Chewing gum seemed to help, but I think having a toothpick in my mouth at work seemed to help more. Although the constant "whats wrong Eric, you don't seem like your cheery self today" was really getting on my nerves. I also noticed that when I became overwhelmed with this desire to break something......doing pull ups till I couldn't go anymore seemed to give me an outlet for it. I am trying really hard not to take it out on the people around me and keep my shit together.....but it is getting hard for me to keep my mouth shut instead of being polite......for instance......guy dropped a allen wrench in his machine today......ruined a set of pinch rollers and jumped the timing chains.......normally I would of just said...oh well...it happens, I'll let you know when it's fixed.........today I just looked at him.....looked at the machine and said...you dumb fuck......he walked away. Later I felt bad.......but the boss got a chuckle out of it. Oh well. Keeping busy or sleeping seems to be the best thing...aside from playing with the kids. The wifes happy cuz the house is freakin spotless, laundrys all done and put away etc......so we will see. I think what scares me the most is my brain seems rather scrambled. But I will press onward.

That was the toughest part for me. Figuring out what to do with the "spare" time that had been filled by smoke breaks. Just try to avoid thinking about it. Keep yourself busy, and over time the urge goes away. Pretty cool actually.

After 72hours, all the nicotine is out of your system and its all mental. Go cold turkey, and back yourself to have the will power.

You'll only quit when you really want to.

I smoked a peter styvesant while typing this.
