Wow - SCCA Ken Payson wreck

Does anyone know any more about this recent wreck (this month) that occured at the John Stim Mem LRP National Group 5 Race?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlHfG...layer_embedded

Really bad wreck on Lap 23. Based on what I have heard, the Lotus apparently spun before the impact (which explains why it's headed in the direction seen on the vid).

Any other facts or knowledge of this race? Was there any casualties?

no casualties. both drivers ok from what i heard. looks like the SM car did not see the local yellow and was in hot pursuit of the lead car when he came upon the stationary lotus.

I can't understand how that driver in the Miata did not see the Lotus dead ahead. I mean, just from looking at the vid, one would think that the Miata driver could have seen that vehicle plain as day, especially if looking ahead of where one is going... .. no? Maybe he was just "in the zone"...

hard to say from the vid. gotta remember he was behind the other SM entering no-name.. and an SM is a pretty low car.. looks like he tried to pass the lead car right there.

If he was in the zone, he'd have heeded the waving yellow flags. Go watch the video again... they're hard to miss.

First thing ANY instructor will tell you is to keep your eyes "up". Meaning, look ahead through the car in front of you if you have to and ALWAYS check the corner workers stations for flags.

That being said, shit happens on the track. We weren't in the drivers seat. Even the best drivers srew up from time to time. I'd bet that after 22 laps he was probably getting a little worn down too.

Glad to hear neither were hurt. That looked like hell.

That's terrible, glad to hear he's OK.

He never had a chance to see him. He went wide through the corner and went for the pass when the leader lifted for the yellow. He didn't get view of the Lotus until he was 2 car lengths away. Yeah, he should have seen the yellow, but when you're 6" off the leaders bumper, shit happens.
