A lot of what they're advocating flies in the face of common sense. Like, I think it was the 2nd district court, ruling that Firefighters who couldn't pass an exam should be advanced solely because they were Black, ahead of Whites and some Hispanics who scored better. Way to go, there Sotomayor.

Interestingly, the hanfull of odd reverse-discrimination cases are highlighted, while the thousands of daily cases of discrimination are kept silent. Let's not forget that until a few decades ago, in the US, there were white-only restaurants, rest-rooms, movie theaters, and blacks were welcome at the back of the bus... Only 40-something years ago... That's less than 2 generations, which is not enough to change mindsets and racial perspectives...

If those thousands of daily cases were perpetrated by the government we'd highlight those as well, as that's what we're talking about. People are free to think how they want, but the government should not recognize race.

lee there is no such thing as Reverse Discrimination, its just plain old Discrimination. Just because its a popular term dose not make it correct. Its like the term "unthawed" which people take to mean not frozen or thawed out. Well Unthawed is really Frozen.

Yes 40 some years ago segregation was still very prevalent in the south. But you see through Govt intervention and gerrymandering we have all kinds of laws aimed at putting and end to discrimination of all types that has done nothing but further the problems.

and 2 generations is more than enough to change mind sets, I am seeing in kids getting outta high school now and I got out 10 years ago. The difference in what I waas taught and learned in from both my parents and school is vastly different than what is happening in the system now.

McDonalds has just launched a all black website for marketing and pandering only to the black demographic. Now if they did a whitey web site Oh the Hell that would be raised from all. But yet if I a whitey say anything bad about this site, I am labeled a racist.

Or maybe the government is trying to help those who are still being discriminated daily by the population... I agree with you that there should be no reason for reverse discrimination, but seeing how the "unban the neegger word" thread went on r3v, I can sense there's still a lot of racism around.

Imagine the following scenario: who should deserve more a scholarship to attend Cambridge or MIT between a black guy raised in an inner city and who managed to make it to the MIT's selection process, or the spoiled white kid who was born with a silver spoon in its ass?

In regard of forgetting centuries of slavery and discrimination in only 2 generations, I doubt it. Look at WWII. That was 60 years ago. Jews haven't forgotten. Nor have the French, Dutch, Brits. Even the Germans themselve still have that burden on their shoulders.

The problem is that in actuality, the 2 kids competing for the scholarship are an inner city black guy and a rural white kid both of which who could never afford a school like MIT. The one who gets the scholarship is the black kid based on events that never took place in either of their lifetimes. How exactly is that fair?

WWII embroiled the whole world nearly a generation of people were wiped out in many affect countries. Jews have not forgotten because they were actively hunted and exterminated for the 1st time in a 1000 years. Thats not something you just up and forget about. The tensions of both WW's still hampers relations in Europe but those are things that are routed in 1000's of years of tribal warfare. No you are right thats not easily forgotten.

Slavery and segregation in this country is a issue that has plagued the USA since its founding, the founding fathers argued over it for months and why key wording in the bill of rights was changed at the last, too keep slavery from being a protected right. Segregation is still an issue but thats more due to with like peoples setting in areas that have the same kinda people in them.

The MIT thing It seem you think that the little ethnic kid "deserves it" more than the rich kid. NO thats not how its supposed to work. Neither is more deserving of anything because of their back ground or color of their skin, it should be on their merits in the application process and if they meet the requirements.

As a matter of fact its this very thing that has caused the quality of a college education to decline in the past 30 years, using affirmative action to give minorities a greater chance at getting it, rather than on merit. This in turn has caused the curriculum to be dummed down to keep these kids in the system and paying. Thank you govt

Oh hey Massive Lee, I heard that not to long ago someone in your Government acknowledged the gun registration scheme was a failure and a massive waste of money? IIRC there was a story on the (CBC?) about how the murders and such were due to criminals doing the public a "service" in the name of turf fighting and drugs? Sounds to me like someone has seen the light.

Thought I would bump this before the pictures thread gets out of control, and also cos I want to know what you guys think would have happening if Zimmerman did not have a gun.

I don't believe that guns need to be band all together, but I think better education on "protecting ones self" is needed. Obviously Zimmerman felt thretened, but could have resovled this in a better way then carring a gun.
