I wonder if the student can claim self-defense. The burglar was most likely unarmed and only looking for stuff to steal. Kid can probably get sued by the state. It looks to me like a murder if the student can't prove his life was in danger.

he can absolutely claim self defense. The question will be if it's enough. The article shows the burglar has been charged with weapons possession in the past. If the burglar lunged at him because he didn't see a gun, then thats enough. If he had no sword he'd probably have been beat up. if he would have tried to defend himself from an ass beating the burglar could have tried grabbing something around him to get the upper hand in the fight.

I think the kid did the right thing assuming he didn't sneak up behind he burglar, say nothing, and then swing at him, thus killing him.
