The real question is are you gonna wanna expand into a huge collection of lenses and equipment. If you just want one lens and ease of use grab a d3000 or something. If you want to take it seriously start at atleast a d90

Sounds like a good camera but the screen does not show what you are shooting before the picture is taken....I'm not sure if most DSLR's are like that but that blows imo...

get the d60 or whatever comparable entry level there is now, i dont know whats what but i bought my d60 years ago and love it. if you do get a nikon, make sure that the BODY has the AUTOFOCUS MOTOR not the lens, that way you have a wider assortment to choose from. Well, you can use the old non AF lenses on a non AF body, just make sure your manual adjustments are up to par, or youre gonna get a lot of blurry pics.

sounds like you already have a camcorder, i dont see why so many ppl try to combine both, IMO they are just fine separate.

get the best body you can buy, with an AF motor.

what do you plan to use the camera for? after the birth/hospital

nature?
racing?
portraiture/family pics/etc
telephoto/stalking/whatever
low light, high light, theres a lot of things out there that will influence your choice.

OOMPH - the older SLR's did not have Live Preview on the LCD screen for the pics, you had to look the old fashioned way, THROUGH THE VIEWFINDER LAWL. For some people that may be a dealbreaker

I read some good reviews on the Canon 60D...

That 60d is amazing the only thing that sucks is that the view finder only has 96% coverage. maybe a little to pro-sumer for the OP

I have a 10d (dinosaur from 2004) 6.4mp and I can take great pics with good lenses. But the LCD screen is so tiny that I can beraly tell if the pics I take are sharp until I get them home. You won't have that problem with the newer ones they all have bigger LCD screens than my 1.8"

Just got a Nikon coolpix s8000. Great little point and shoot with good optical zoom. $250-$300 depending where you buy it.

1st of all, the 60D has more viewfinder coverage than any of the Rebel series, therefore making it superior. AFAIK the 7D is even closer to 100% coverage and so is the 5D

2nd this thread is over a year old, I don't think his wife would have been in labor this long so I'm sure he's picked a camera by now ;)
