i bought a nikon d60 and its great but now I wish i would of gotten the d90.
for the d60 it needs lenses to have an autofocus adjustment motor in the lens or you have to manual focus. the d90's and any models up have the motor in the body. and you can use any nikon lens.

welcome to 3 years ago. get a d60 or d3000. still entry level, except the newer versions.

you could find a used d40 for like $300-$400, though.

The D60 has also been replaced with the d5000, which has the sensor of the D90/D300 but stripped of some of their features.

I am partial to Canon (one film slr, one digital slr, two point and shoots).

do people still do this? are you really going to sit down with the family and watch it? It's kind of like video taping a funeral. I doubt the kid is going to want to see his head poking out his mom's hoo-hoo, either.

I dont want to video tape that but, even though I never use it, I like the idea that my D300s can record video through my 200mm/2.8 lense for when my son kicks the game-winning goal. And he will or else he will face the broad side of my leather belt.

For a good point and shoot, I really like my Canon G10. Night/low light images aren't the greatest, but it does take pretty spectacular pictures when set up right.

not really. the d3000 is the replacement for the d60. the d5000 sits in between the d60/d3000 and the d90.

No, its called moving up the line. You cant directly replace the old model so each replacement had to move up in technology. And they are keeping form too because the D5000 is as pointless as the D60.

The real question is are you gonna wanna expand into a huge collection of lenses and equipment. If you just want one lens and ease of use grab a d3000 or something. If you want to take it seriously start at atleast a d90
