Now humor me a minute....
The 914 historically hasn't gotten a lot of respect..."Just a VW" ...."ugly duckling"....etc etc.
The plain jane stock skinny-wheeled 914 doesn't do much for me, but the GT or factory M471 package completely changes the car. It is low, it is wide, it is much stiffer, it is much faster.
And something I noticed - more Porsche evolution and lineage at work, like the line from the 904 to the 917 (all were Piech-driven, no?) -
look at a 907/908 in profile and a 914/6 GT in profile.
They both start with the cookbook mid-engine race car / sportscar formula - low nose, long high windshield, short people compartment to get bodies / engine / fuel close to the center of gravity, a rear bulkhead ahead of the engine, the engine / trans / rear susp package under a flat rear deck, and a short, flat back end.
The 908, obviously, is a wind-governed design to minimize drag and improve high speed stability. The 914 was designed as a street car for the new 70s with a more modern, blockier look than a 911. Designed by Porsche as an entry-level car, shared with VW because of development budget and insider family deals, and actually built at Karman.
But look at some details - the 914 windshield is the highest point of the car, then the roof and rear body tapers back. The bulkhead window and then the sail panels pick up that little curve from the 908 / 917. Flat rear deck tapering down to the rear. The 908 headlight bubble becomes a fender ridge and parking light on the 914.
It may be too obvious, but I think it's cool how Porsche's designs are connected and they use references from the past.
They're the poor man's vintage mid-engined race car.
