why are you guys spendings so much? I used to get top of the line computers for years but now the best will be just average within a year or so. Now I just spend money to get something decent and replace them more often. Will end up costing close to the same in the end I guess but I don't have to worry about payments or getting jacked.

I bought an Asus laptop once. Never again. True, I paid 2/3 of what an equivalent Dell or HP would cost, but damn! It was put together so badly! All that cracking sounds from keyboard, weak hinges - never again.

I replace laptops every 3 years (well, maybe 2,5) - so if I spend 400 USD more to get a better laptop, that's about 13 USD per month in difference - I can live with that.

the only reason all you computer interweb newbz have slow computers is because you download crap and install anti-viruses in your computer. learn to keep things clean, away from bad programs and if you do encounter one, learn how to shut it down.. learn the registry, learn the msconfig atleast..jesus

..and by clean i mean running programs..not memory space..noob.

And no you didn't read what I wrote, I have seen what happened to my dad's and best friend's computers first hand. As far as my uncle that works for Dell, you are right the problems occur with pretty much their entire line of laptops from the base to the top.

Poorly built computers DO shit themselves. Just like anything that isn't built well...

And Dell support is well, possibly more of a joke than Obama in the white house
              lol

I dont work for Dell, I work for a medium sized accounting firm. Before my company bought into Dell's, we used HP. I do know what I am talking about. We do have a Dell manufacturing facility in my city, and yes you are a moron.
I think that about wraps it up.

They have done pretty well...I have had my thinkpad (lenevo just bougtht them out at the time) and it has been running solid. Only problem with my current ibm laptop is that its too slow for my financial modeling programs/extensive excel spread sheets. It looks like I might stick with the dell laptop..

                Thanks for your help gentlemen!

I don't like new HP laptops, their physical build quality is pretty poor. I would take the dell over the HP. I used to really dislike dells, but I think their new laptops are one of the better ones out there. The only issue I have seen is HD's go out prematurely. They are WD drives which I find kind of surprising.

                    Edit:

in response to asubimmer, every single laptop is a pile of crap. Companies don't give a rats ass what goes into it, whatever Chinese child can do it the cheapest wins. Different companies seem to suck less every year or so.

+1. Only it is just over 5 years old and a laptop, but same difference.

My sister is on her 4th laptop in 5 years, and complains they are slow, broken, or screwed up. She sees no correlation with her use of Limewire, etc. and most likely poor download / spyware sense. I took her "ruined" Dell laptop (yes, the screen can't stand up on its own, and the right clicker is pretty much broken - but spare monitor and wireless keyboard / mouse fixes that) and have a nice kitchen music / recipe setup.

Sure, I've doubled my ram, taken good care of it, and maybe had to replace a hard drive, but my Dell has been great to me and I'm loyal to them and look forward to a new, lighter Inspiron 15 with Win 7 for CHEEEEEEEEEAP ($549 with 4GB ram and Intel Dual Core T4300).

But my father bought about a 3k dell laptop that he has had to send back about 3 times now and it still crashes and fails all the time.

One of my best friend's also has a relative working for a dell and bought another top of the line laptop that has spent most of its life back at dell being fixed.

You really know me well huh?
                        A 3k laptop, what kind?

Just saying. I have administered two enterprises who used Dell and our servers were rock solid and our laptops were punished and help up well. Sure they broke from time to time but what do you expect when you give something to a field project manager. Very few laptops can withstand being dropped from the cockpit of a gantry crane.

Dell also has an awesome warranty if you opt for it. They will be there the next day to replace whatever part you broke (we went through countless screens because people would slam them shut with stuff laying on the keyboard).

Me personally, i'd go with a Dell over an HP. The last 2 computers i've bought were Dell's and i never had any issues with them.

                              1. IBM Thinkpad
                              2. Dell

I would not buy an HP. Happy shopping.

I would like to depart from defending dell to join in on the Thinkpad love fest. I dont know how the new Lenovo version stands up but I had a thinkpad that I rocked for 8 years. That is like 3 eons in laptop time. I finally had to "retire" it because 500mhz just became too slow for todays applications.

Now it runs a lightweigh Linux build for fun and practice. The screen is a little loose but otherwise like new (save for all of the visual wear from a 8 years of use by a traveling businessman and student.
                                Im now E30less.
