lets take viet nam as an example
the reason we left is democrats back home refused to fund the follow-up to the war after the NORTH sued for peace. the north had its ass whipped during the tet offensive. they lost the war. they sued for peace.
only after the peace accords the usa abandoned the south due to political pressures brought to bear back in the USA. the democrats refused to support the south and the rest is history. you can blame the killing fields directly on the back the congress.

The US got their butt kicked in Nam after 15 years of atrocities. They'll have their butt kicked in Afghanistan and in Iraq because there's no way out. There was not one single reason to start both conflicts. Period. The reasons to enter these conflicts were all bogus. Fighting Reds in Nam and fighting terrorism in Afghanistan and Iraq. That's called hunting for White Elephants. Vietnam has never attacked the US. Afghans and Iraqis have never attacked the US either. The so-called terrorist mastermind is a Saudi. But hey, it's not too practical that he comes from the same family that supplies oil, so let's find scapegoats...

Whatever the US "patriots" on these board are taught to think, these are three shamefull wars that the US hasn't or won't win. And I am quite happy that it's only a minority of Americans who think how great these wars are/were. There are way more "wars" to fight within the country BTW.

15 years, we didnt have combat troops on the ground till march of 1965. sure there were a few advisers and air base and support crews but as far as combat, 65 was the year. Ended in 74 so really it was 9 years and couple of months of active combat operations, far cry from 15 years of atrocities.

Why dont you go talk to some of these veterans from any of these conflicts, and get a real 1st hand account.

Oh btw I dont think war is a good thing at any time, some times its necessary and if you get into it, you should see it through to the end, something that has not been done in a while.

Nukes are a bit extreme for what we are in. But mass carpet bombing of villages that harbor enemy I am all for. You warn each and every village that if you harbor or aid any one, they will be wiped off the map. You do that to 2 or 3 villages guess what they will fall in line and stop aiding the Taliban, and other like groups. The inhabitants will start to look out for them selves 1st rather than the ideology of the few

No they were not reasonable, not entirely anyway. if there was truly a suspected enemy position and there was reasonable evidence to lead to that conclusion, then the initial assault was justified. Unfortunately the fact that it spiraled into what it did is sad and heart wrenching. Its also a crime, that those that were involved were not put to death or forced labor for the rest of their lives.
