Sounds like an honest noob mistake, it could of happened at e36tech or bimmerfest.com.

Hell knowing that person, in 3 months tops his 3xx will have m3 bumpers, angel eyes, a dropped suspension and 18" wheels just like every bfc member.

dont forget BFC's motto, LTW's, clear and a drop. That was when I was into E36's its now probably " Stretched poked mad euro, ambers, slammed on its nut till it has the handling of a 3 wheeled rusted shopping cart"

most CAR people know what M is. i'd say most bmw owners do NOT know what m-tech is unless they are an enthusiast or they've been spec-ing out their 3 or 5 series. most bmw owners don't even know what e30, e36, etc. means. or that it even exists. i'd even argue that most bmw salesman don't even know what the chassis codes are. have you ever tried talking to them about that kind of thing? i've even had guys behind the parts counter stare at me blankly as i say "e30".

the point is, if you are on a car forum or searching online to find a car forum, you are way ahead of most people who own that particular car or are looking to buy one. if you have hundreds or thousands of posts on a car forum, it is likely that your perception of the knowledge that most owners of that particular brand of car is very skewed.

r3v has 17k+ members, and far less active ones. how many E30s were built again? over a million? even if 3/4s of those are completely destroyed or owned by people who don't speak english, that leaves about 230k E30s with owners who aren't on r3v.

so in short- don't expect people to know every model name of BMW and what it means, and especially don't expect people to know the names of limited-run/special edition versions of bmws.
