If you are the point of asking for this young lady's hand in marriage, I would assume her folks know you and approve of you, correct? Also, the parent's prolly already know your intentions, yeah? I was scared as hell when I asked my father in law for his daughter's hand in marriage. He told me that we were to young and should finish school before marriage. I said I couldn't wait that long, I wanted to start our life now. It kind of went back and forth for a bit but he gave his blessing. It didn't help that him and my mother in law knew each other for 3 weeks in college before they got married, she chimed in to remind him of this when he was saying we needed more time.

Having the sacks to come to him first is already doing a lot for you, he is gonna bust your chops but if you have a good relationship it will go well. Good luck.

I hope the fathers' not a drunk. A buddy of mine just asked the father a few weeks back, showed him the ring, said how he was going to do it, they were real excited. A couple days later he gets hammered and tells the daughter and ruins the surprise.

Or maybe he'll have a sense of humor, when my old boss called the girlfriends parents to meet with them and get permission, they already knew what was going on. The father was a retired detective, and apparently a very funny guy, who decided to play a joke on my boss. When he rang the doorbell the mother answered the door telling him it was a bad time, and that he should come back later, and then he saw the father (pretending to be) stumbling drunk with his pistol in hand shouting "let him in, he's gotta ask me something! What do you wanna ask Craig?" My boss bolted for his car and made it about a 1/4 mile away before they got him on his cell, telling him to come back.
