Merc pwn the German "sleeper" (or more appropriately titled "Q Ship") class.
300 SEL 6.3 started it in the '60s before the 500E kicked it off again in the 90s.Leave a comment:

The e34 540i/6 was damn fast and looked like any other e34 as long as you didn't get the M-sport package with body kit/wingLeave a comment:

This - I remember reading about them when I was a kid. This is the definitional of a sleeper. Bad picture - they are quite attractive actually. It's like a 175 MPH 4 door that still looks modern. What the hell more could you want (except a BMW maybe?)Leave a comment:

Man I really love this car, my buddy had one just sitting in his back yard for the longest time when I was around 14-15. I always sat in it and changed the gears like I was speed racer. Never knew then that it had this kind of power. I think the styling is slick too.An S50 E30 will make quick work of most production cars today, let alone in 1990. Dumb comparison.
I've always thought all M5s were very understated styling-wise, if you didn't know your shit generally only the big wheels would give it away.
Edit: and since that was just mentioned, how about the Lotus Carlton. It was really an Opel (German) but Lotus made the engine.
Not super understated, but I really like this car. 380hp 410ftlbs, TT 3.6 I6.
Here's a turbo Saab flat out trying to keep up with one:
