The irony of the deaths is that the Polish representants were on their way to a ceremony about the 1940 massacre of 22,000 Polish army and police officers and civil servants by the Soviets in Katyn's woods. A massacre for which Soviets "kinda" recognized their responsibility in 1990, but yet never gave any official excuse.

Pilot was pressured to land the plane to make it in time, they already left Warsaw with a delay

this was not the first time this pilot was forced to do something risky by Kaczynski

this was the same guy that flew him to Georgia during the war, while the Russians threatened to shoot the plane down if it would cross their airspace

According to latest news.

The pilot did NOT make 4 attempts to land. Hi circled the airport 4 times. During that he was discussing with the tower the options for landing. They DID advise him to go to another airport. The pilot said he has enough fuel to make one approach to the Smolensk airport, and if it would show too difficult, he would go to other airport.

At some point communication between the plane and the tower stopped (reasons unknown at this point). Russian ground control claims the pilot at some point stopped updating the tower on the approach part. Note - Smolensk airport has NO approach assistance systems.

What is a bit concerning though, Smolensk tower claims, there were problems with communication due to pilot's poor knowledge of Russian language. This is strange, because the pilot often flew through Russian aerospace, and had an excellent command of Russian language...

At this point it is too early to blame anyone (besides the weather). The plane was equipped with all modern systems enabling it to fly in the fog. And there is no point in blaming anyone - it won't bring them back to life. But we all would like to know what exactly happened.

I watched FoxNews's report on the crash - stunning. They say the pilot made 4 approaches to landing, the airport had approach assistant, pilot ignored all signals from the tower, and (this rocks!) the airport was closed but the pilot decided to land anyways... Well of course the airport was closed!! It's a military airport, open solely for the flights of Polish primeminister, Russian primeminister (thursday, or friday - don't remember) and finally - Polish president.

Whenever the blackboxes will be examined I'll update you on the situation.
