I've had the plane full of high-ranking people before and the perceived pressure to get them there on time can be enormous.

In my circle the culture is that it's better to have a pissed Admiral than a dead Admiral. I have never had one complain--- EVER --- about a flight safety decision I've made that inconvenienced them.

Unless I really boned-up the first (it's happened...) I would never take a missed approach for another attempt at the same runway unless I had a really good reason. It's just dangerous. That's what alternate airports are for.

I feel horrible for the passengers and for Poland.

Mostly agree... I've made multiple approaches to below-minimums airports before, but that was because I knew it would be clearing shortly.

People don't understand what a busy place the cockpit can be in crappy weather and trying to shoot an approach to minimums. That said, you have to do your job and you have to evealuate the safety of the flight at all times. It isn't easy, I couldn't imagine the pressure of having a country's leader on board. I've flown Senators, Congressmen (idiots all), and State Adjutants General. There's always extra pressure. That's one reason for having the dedicated aircraft and crews that we use here for our President.

It is a very sad loss and I sincerely hope the Poles can recover quickly, reestablish their government, and continue with life peacefully.

Sadly, 100 persons have died in a plane crash. Some being heads of a state. Period. Blaming the pilot or the control tower for their mistake is far from being politics. Maybe you should go back to slip. You perhaps had too much to drink last night... ;-)
