      Cool story bro.

OP- Might want to think about just a simple band as well. Have both, just sayin. I dig the gear thing though. I'd get it snagged on pockets and sweaters etc.

how much do engagement/wedding rings usually cost?

i've heard that it's supposed to be 2 months of your salary, but is that just tradition, or does it still hold true?

It's cool and all, but seems pretty tacky for a wedding ring. Looks like something you'd buy a 13 year old as a kit and let them put it together.

my grandfather was a jeweler and watch maker and still makes rings and wut not even thought he shouldnd cause of this retirement pension. But a year ago he showed me the first ring he ever made back in 1942, it was made out of copper cause he was still in skool when he made it. so i will make a mold out of it and use it as a wedding ring for my girl.

"The average cost of a jewelry store diamond engagement ring is between $3,500 and $4,000."

It depends on who you want to tie the knot with. A basic 1 carat princess cut solataire is $8250 from Tiffany's if she is a spoiled princess. You can go more with a fancy side-stoned or cased band... but might as well be wiping your ass with hundros at that point. A good quality 1 carat and 14k white gold solitaire band from Union Diamond could be had for $3100 if she isn't stuck on the little blue box. And can be much more economical if you go 1/2 or 3/4 carat. The chick roommate who lived with me wanted a 2+ carat but she lived in a fantasy world anyway...

But if she loves you, then whatever you choose should be enough. There's more important things to invest in than trying to buy love with a diamond.

Online diamond places where you build your own probably give you the best deal. Learn about the 4C's and get the most for your money: http://www.consultantninja.com/2009/...s-diamond.html VS1/2 and I are good standards to get the best value. And the cut is where the bling factor comes from, go premium or ideal in lieu of a bigger rock.

2 month salary is a marketing ploy from Da Beers. Average x 12 month / 2 months = a lot less than the average salary in America of people getting engaged.

My review of the Kinekt Design Gear Ring:

                              Purchased 6/2/2010
                              Received 6/7/2010

The design is far from traditional and the functionality contains an obvious feature that is hard to avoid. The construction is less than optimal however. Upon watching the video and looking at pictures of the ring, I was convinced that this was a solid, smooth piece of jewelry. For the most part it is, however as a Mechanical Engineer, I see some flaws in the design that have room for improvement.

When I received the ring, which came promptly by USPS, it came in a very nice, secure package and included some paraphernalia regarding the company and the warrantee. The ring itself came in a nice box with a note saying, “Warning, the spinning of this ring may inadvertently cause a lack of productivity and work-related progress. Please enjoy responsibility”. This saying is definitely true in the fact that I kept spinning it trying to do a couple full rotations without having the gears bind up. The tolerances on the spur gears as well as the circular ring gears, for lack of a better word, were of moderate quality. The spur gears are held in place by small slot-head screws; Screws that have the appearance of not been screwed in all the way. When you wave your hand or jiggle the ring, it “rattles” of loose parts. The parts didn't get looser after playing with it, but I suspect that with the inherent loose tolerances of the moving parts combined with the behavior of somebody constantly spinning the ring that eventually the parts will start breaking.

There is, however, a lifetime warrantee with this product and they will replace in the event of damage from sand, dirt, human error, or wrong size exchange. This company has been around for approximately 3-5 months, so the lifetime warrantee is questionable depending on the availability of the company at the time the ring breaks, if it does. I do have some questions for Kinekt as to validate the quality of the product. What reliability tests or mechanical qualification tests has this ring been subjected to? Have any other materials been suggested for the construction of the ring?

Final Verdict: For the first pass of an innovative idea for a ring, I’m impressed. The stainless steel will not rust or corrode. There are no sharp edges from which to cut your hand. The sizes are very accurate to the standard ring sizes. There is noteworthy room for improvement in the way of tighter tolerances. I understand that it needs to be loose enough to prevent binding, but in this case it is the nature of the loose tolerances that cause it to bind more than 1 occasion. It wasn’t the anticipated smooth, quiet, "solid" ring when you spin the gears, but it is sure fun to play with. If this company sticks around for a while and for $165 shipped, I can’t complain and it’s been a great conversation starter to boot.

Debating just putting in CZ, but I'm pretty sure that would not be a smart move on my part. haha lying about an engagement ring doesn't really set a smooth road for marriage.
