mazda has this in their new cars, as an option. it saves as much as 15% fuel in the city i think.

it uses barely any fuel to re-start.

having it controlled outside the car though... ehh...

Its pretty retarded. Why not make traffice sensors smarter and not stop the traffic when there are no cars in the opposing intersection? No I guess that would be too practical

          SERIOUSLY..

OR Really like Designing Better traffic signals/signs at intersection, More roundabouts, ETC....

It seems like Alot of gas could be saved from just not stopping at the stop signs that 90% of the time are empty intersections anyway.

anyways, roundabouts would Be FTW in terms of stop signs in not so busy areas.

Better traffic signal sensors would be 10X better too.

The vast majority of americas are to fucking stupid to figure out round-a-bouts, I mean come on 99% have not a fucking clue how to go about a 4 way stop. Have you ever been through a round-a-bout, most people get all fucked up in them and have to make a few laps to figure out how to escape.

Oh traffic enginners set up lights and signals to get the bulk of the traffic where it wants to go in the most efficient manner possible based of time of day and where people are going in general (in or out of town going to and from work). Even if there is no traffic at the other road, if they let things keep going it would over load the road some place else along the line. They know, how many cars they can move in any area at a given pace.

Most everyone around here kills it at RR stops anyways, unless it's hot and humid at that time.

Yippee, just what cars there days need -- more electronic bullshit. As if Toyota hasn't shown us some of the issues these systems can obviously have...

Absolutely no problem in my old Volvo though, what with it's "low-tech" mechanical steering, brakes and throttle. Imagine that...

+1. As much as I'd like to kill my engine at red lights, I don't wanna risk being the asshole holding up a green light.

But I'll totally kill the engine if I'm gonna be coasting for a 1/4 mile or more (like every off ramp), then use the gearbox to start it back up. Definitely cuts back on fuel consumption.

I really think we just need to teach people to be better and more fuel efficient drivers by their driving habits rather than inventing things that do it for them.

Agreed, but it's kind of a crap shoot IMO. This concept is good, the intrusion factor is not. Just like teaching people good driving habits = great, the majority of people's ability to learn these things / concern (mostly concern) = terrible.

Remember how much flak Obama got by asking people to check their tire pressure?

That's why TPMS are federally mandated now, because of the attitude of apathy/persecution towards anything even remotely considered 'environmentally friendly', which apparently is treated as synonymous with 'leftist' or whatever new label is currently being arbitrarily thrown around.

I think ultimately the only thing that's gonna cut down fuel consumption in this country is federal mandates and/or increased cost of gasoline.

Also, much like the general 'sky is falling' attitude of these kinds of issues, I highly doubt we'll see this technology put into effect ANY time soon (barring maybe the aforementioned reasons).

A patent doesn't mean much. There's a patent for the AIDS vaccine too, but that doesn't mean I'm throwing my rubbers away.
