The harsh martian winter proved too extreme. Scientists speculate ice build-up on the solar panels (which it used to generate power) were damaged or broken - thus serving as a death nail to the experiement.

I remember following the news and NASA internet feeds with it first landed on the red planet. Pretty fucking epic stuff. Phoenix offered plenty of important lessons learned and challenges to overcome. Future attempts will be even better....if they are planning more.
