    Dead: Phoenix Mars Lander

The harsh martian winter proved too extreme. Scientists speculate ice build-up on the solar panels (which it used to generate power) were damaged or broken - thus serving as a death nail to the experiement.

Probably, but death nail sounds pretty fucking epic.

I think that's my new thrash metal band name, haha.

I always thought it was death nail, but that is probably me putting death knell and last nail in the coffin together.

Back on topic, the lander already outlived its usefulness for the most part, not a huge loss. Now time to send some Humans to Mars that can take facebook pictures next to it.

In other news, they got Voyager 2 back online.

That's gotta be fun, troubleshooting 35 year old hardware from 9 billion miles away with every instruction taking 26 hours.

Maybe ice will melt in martian summer?

I think problem is that the Winter ice wrecked the solar panels, warping them beyond use. So even if the ice melts they are still worthless sadly.

Knell.....nail....whatev. You get my point :-P

I remember following the news and NASA internet feeds with it first landed on the red planet. Pretty fucking epic stuff. Phoenix offered plenty of important lessons learned and challenges to overcome. Future attempts will be even better....if they are planning more.
