Armenia is further East than Turkey, which is considered a Middle Eastern country (even though Turkey wants to join the EEC). Check a map, and you'll find Armenia between Azerbajian, Georgia, Iran, Syria and Turkey. And if defining "European" by its religion (Christianity), then Armenia was the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as the official state religion (3rd century - a few years before the US)...

Christianity was the Armenians' curse and led to the genocide of 500,000 Armenians. That Armenian holocaust took place around 1915, which I am sure you already know.

This was discussed before and supposedly Christianity was not Armenia's down fall.

That explanation is overly simplistic to the point of being inaccurate.

The killing of Armenians (whether you want to call it a genocide or not) at the end of the Ottoman period had very little to do with their religion. The vast majority of Christian Ottoman subjects were not killed. Any historian would tell you that there were a number of political, social, and economic motivations behind the events in question...but religion wasn't an issue.

Turks almost wiped out the whole population. Very strong case of genocide there. Friend is Armenian and his hatred for the Turks is very loud and vocal when ever we fly by or overhead.

But to tell you the truth Armenian and Turkey are not European. Turkey wants acceptance into the EU and was laughed at for quite some time for that.

No really, being Persian, you get the VIP treatment in So cal...sorta. I've been to 2 or 3 restaurants where my grandpa gave a speech about being one of the Shah's generals, and I forcefully had my bill taken care of.

No, no Massive, I appreciate your post, and we are all aware of it. However, some Turkish members may get mad , but it is no laughing matter.

Turks don't even recognize the genocide today and will have all sort of interpretations. Turkey will only recognize the genocide if it allows them to enter EEC. Indeed, a few Turks (hi Emre) on the forum will tell it was not a genocide or that it wasn't based on religion or social classes. Which is obviously not the Armenians' point of view from. ;-)

BTW I had/have many, many Armenian friends, and as far as I recall, they always said "genocide", not "evaporation of people"... ;-)
