I'd say the major problem associated with a MK4 golf is the fact that it is a MK4 golf. I would never buy a VW if I was worried about cost of maintenance of a E30 lol. parts are just as expensive and you are going to need a whole lot more of them.

Hatch back civic is the tits for a DD. I miss mine, 43 MPG and slammed. It was a joy to drive.

the e30's that im looking at are 318i's, not is, and our i's have the m40, also, my dad is largly funding this and he's only looking at cars in the late 90's...he also is not a fan of euro stuff cos of the price of parts and proper service's

but srsly, what about a MK4 Golf? I've already got a reputable VW mechanic but are there any problems associated with this car?

a decent turbo one is worth around 9k here and you cant drive them when you first get your licence. Na ones are well thrashed and not worth it.

yeah, in aus you, when you are on your provisional license, you cant drive cars that have a turbo or super charger, or a car that produces over 200kw...if we didnt have that i'd already be cruisin in my r32 :D

and btw, my budget is round about the 6k mark,id only considered a golf cos i have a cousin that had one and it was apparently a very good car, so good, that now he's got a new gti(which is awesome).
