SC*AR (Schwarz Army)
No longer stock ride height, rolling as low as a daily driver in New England should without worrying about breaking an oil pan. -
I want the Toyota Hilux as driven in Top Gear. Seriously, that thing looks like it can murder winter.
Plus it's already got KC light covers! Represent' all over the world.

Subaru nutjob owner here.
Buy a subaru. I'm quite partial to the second gen legacies (95-99), since you can get them cheap, impreza stuff bolts on, and they're stupid reliable. In the five years that I have owned my leggy, I've spent $500 on maintenance. Total (not including tires). Legacies also come in wagon form that can carry tons of shit. Later models from that generation also had heated leather seats.
Whether you get a legacy or an impreza is up to you, but definitely get a manual. The autos are AWD cars that send 70% of the power to the front. Manuals are true 50/50 full time split, which is a godsend in the winter. Rally drifting around turns is soooo goddamned fun! Get a manual AWD scoob with skinny studded snow tires. You'll be able to go 70mph up a cliff in a blizzard.Comment

I have an 04 outback as well, which does NOT have the early ej25 motor issues. They fixed that ~2000-2001 as I remember.
The 2.2s are dead-nuts reliable. $10 ebay intake, as ghey as the idea sounds, has been dyno proven to bring the motor up to nearly 2.5L levels. Wakes the car right the fuck up, and for $10..... amazing. It's still slow though, hence why mine's getting the equivalent of a Subaru S50.Comment

If only you had a higher budget. I would go with a GF or GC Impreza. But, I'm bias. Lol

I think I'm just going to slap some snows on, put stock springs back in, spray everything down with Fluid Film, and call it a day.Comment

You find anything yet? I'd say Impreza if you want gas mileage. If you're OK with 16-18 MPG, and you like having extra room for hauling shit, 5.0 Explorer's are nice. My buddy had one and using it a few times convinced me to buy one. Explorers got a bad rep with the shitty V6 drivetrains, but the V8 drivetrain and AWD system is pretty nice. My e30's have spent about 100x longer in my garage for repairs then the "POS Ford", which hasn't left me sit once. I got mine with 100k miles for $2900 3 years ago, but you can find them cheaper now. Mine runs circles around small pickups in the snow (as does my e30 with snow tires), I don't know why anyone would use a small pickup for a winter vehicle anyway...Comment

E30 + Blizzaks = unstoppable.
I've driven open diff, LSD, ix.. any of them do great getting from point a to b in 6" of snow/ice. The ix was the most fun about it though.sigpic

^ he speaks the truth. I daily my ix during the winter with a set of dunlop snow's on it and it'll go through a substantial amount. Though the price of tierods and control arms are horrific....
I say either go with the ix or the jeep cherokeesigpicComment

Neighbor has one. It is rattlecanned it a light gray and has a plywood rack in the trunk for storage. Also has a bar across the front. I forget what they are actually called (cattle bar or something)? Yeah also he has new jeep liberty wheels on it rattlecanned gunmetal gray. Its fairly BAComment

now that i have my e30 beater my rx8 will get garaged in the winter. but i drove it all the time in the winter with a set of 225/50/17 blizzaks. went great. never got stuck. and i went through at least 6" of snow a few times.AWD > RWDComment

When my current dunlops wear down, i'm gonna switch to blizzaks.
Blizzaks + ix = awesome.
The blazer idea isn't a bad one either. My dad's 97 s10 blazer has over 400k on it (just changed the engine 4k ago), does great in the snow, and starts every time.
I've driven it when we had well over a foot of snow on unplowed roads and it did fine w/4wd and a slightly taller tire size.sigpicComment
