Great lakes guys know what day it is???????

Most here are prolly to young to remember this, as I being from MI and the Little woman form Duluth, its just one of those days that we remember as kids being kinda somber for many many years and still hits close to home for her family being form the Duluth.

35 years ago the 750 foot Iron Ore boat, Edmond Fitzgerald went down in a gale on Lake superior just 10 miles behind another ship.

Good song written in the early 80's in memory By Gordon Lightfoot

35 years ago today, a powerful November storm walloped the Great Lakes, sinking the Edmund Fitzgerald and all 29 crewmembers aboard.

I love that song. It was actually earlier than the 80's, he was performing that song in 1979, the year my little brother was born. I heard a great band called "Fire in the Kitchen" at Sally O'Brian's on FtLauderdale beach doing a great rendition, have the CD, but can't find a link.

Lately it's said a rogue wave that took it down.

    They will be remembered.

well I was thinking it was 82 that the song went out (you might be right with 78-79)

Yeah last thing I heard is was supposedly a series of rogues about 90 feet high that actually forced the boat to bridge them and it folded up in the middle. Or the one wave that when it went down the down slope it submarineed the bow and it never came back up and just speared the bottom and buckled in the middle.

I've never seen any of the great lakes in person, so it just seems strange to me to hear of such a storm on a lake.

They are WAY bigger than huge. Difficult to imagine, if not impossible.

Lemme explain this: there is an Island (Manitoulin Island) in Lake Huron (2nd smallest Great Lake).

That Island has a lake (Manitau) in it.

That lake is bigger than Lake Washington.

The great lakes are fucking VAST beyond belief.

the great lakes are fucking huge. such large bodies of water, its difficult to fathom at first but once you get out there and see it, you'll get it.

hell, i was in peninsula last year and sailed my first boat on lake michigan out there, and all you see is water, water, horizon, bird(not in that order haha). to me, if you can't see the other side of it, its too goddamn big lol.

That song makes the hair on my arms stand on end, idk why, but it has always had alot of meaning to me.

it is without a doubt 3 cord Gord's best song ever.

and "The great lakes"? more like "medium sized inland sea's". soo big. my wife grew up on lake Ontario, and it is huge.

Picked-up the NY Times the other day. There was an article on the Edmund Fitzgerald, which mention that Lightfoot has recently changed the lyrics of the song. It used to imply that a hatch was not held down, suggesting human error. He has changed it in respect to the families of the crew.

I've grown up on the great lakes and am happy to say that I'm able to go fishing all the time during the summer on Lake Huron.

Lets just say that our lakes are closer to being inland sea's... Storms come on VERY quick and can be really harsh. That being said, as a native, Lake Superior is the most erie/scary body of water i've ever laid eyes on.

I got the pleasure/horror of watching a waterspout at night come across St. Clair while going from Erie to Huron. Not something I want to repeat. I couldn't imagine the shit that those ore boats have seen.

Have been up to Isle Royal Fishing on a little 26 footer and had a Summer storm blow up outta FUCKING NO WHERE. it went from 75+ Degrees to about 40 RIGHT NOW. Wind kicked up and before we could even get lines reeled in the water went form nearly flat calm to OH FUCKING SHIT WE ARE GONNA DIE. Yeah Superior is a very scary body of water when the weather turns.

Some day if I am really lucky we both hope to have a 2ed home right on Superior on either the North Shore in MN or out on the Keweenaw some where.
