    I need a winter beater.

I need a winter beater that can get shit done in the snow. It doesn't have to be real pretty, just reliable and 4wd. I can spend roughly $2000 and would prefer something simple to work on if it does in fact break on me. Any ideas? I don't really know anything about the truck or suv world, but I am assuming thats what I am going to need to go with. I am thinking like mid 1990's Jeep, Honda Passport, Isuzu Rodeo, Mitsu Montero or a cheap smaller pickup. Any ideas or suggestions? My fiancée and I both need to get to work this winter snow or not and I was thinking I can use it to head up to the mountains for some snow boarding.

    sank you.

I agree with the Jeep, the Cherokee Sports were tough 4.0L six is bulletproof, I had a Grand and it was balls tough (mine was a 98' with 5.2 V8) the Grands with V8 are rough on fuel though.

How are they to work on? Simple enough for someone with some technical knowledge and basic mechanic ability?

I got this for a good price. For nearly 2000 you could get one in really good shape.

the 4.0 is one of the easiest motors I've ever worked on, not sure about the V8s.

Its more about the tires than the car. Get whatever you can find in reasonable running condition with FWD or AWD and add some good snow tires.

Last 2 years I was driving around a 99 Honda Accord. With brand new Michelin Alpine tires. Worked great, never got stuck. I'm in Detroit, so I'd guess snow fall is similar.

The E30 now has some older Blizzaks on it. Has been doing great so far as well.

With all that said - Subie FTW. Especially if you put snows on it!

Jeep is def your best bet. Parts are everywhere and they are easy to work on.

Well, I find AWD snow driving performance better than 4wd, but that's just me. My vote goes to an iX, Jeep 4.0L, or Subie

I just picked up my new winter beater... My old one (89 range rover classic) cracked it's block when i lent it to my brother, This block probably won't crack any time soon. 77 Wagoneer 33" tires, 2" lift, it's pretty burly.

that thing looks really cool and fun, but at the same time looks like a vehicle that NEVER gets warm inside of it.

I love me some 318 e30 for winter time fun-- with the right tires, any car will be good through the snow.
