my project had to have a theme: Retro/Vintage Processing with a techniqueof Bokeh.

i wanted to go find a pac man arcade game (which doesn't exist) and use some custom slides i made for it...had a lot of fun learning what bokeh can do, and working on mastering it while keeping it subtle... i have a ton more that i may put up this weekend

The wider the lens the more area you can view and hopefully catch a meteor crossing the lens. Trying to shoot a meteor shower is like winning the lottery. You keep shooting till you win (and catch one) I've spent a lot of hours trying and only caught 3. They were all over the sky, except for the area where I had the camera pointed.

Or wide enough. Shorter focal length equal wider.

Although that 14mm is on a heavy crop sensor so your 18mm may actually be wider on DX. Nothing beats the 24 1.4 on a full frame for some nice middle of the night sky shots. ;)

Those are all the meteors I've gotten in history. At 5 to 10 minutes a shot, and I've shot hundreds of shots, yeah I've wasted a huge amount of time for 3 meteors.

@blackbirdm3. Damn, I didn't know it was that hard to catch a meteor, that makes it so much cooler. I'm assuming that you need to be in the dark country with no city lights to get that much depth in the galaxy?

Yeah, catching a meteor with the camera is like catching a bolt of lightning (I've only managed to do that once.) with the camera.

To get a good shot of the Milky Way, yes you need to be as far away from city lights as possible. If I remember correctly, I think I shot that at ISO 800 for 45 seconds at F7.1 (This is off the top of my head) I think I might have enhanced the image in Lightroom a little as well (I can't remember what all I did. I might have just adjusted the white balance and corrected the lens distortion.) I think I shot that about 4 AM or so. The other thing you can try and do is get above the light and shoot from the highest point you can get to. This removes some of the air pollution and possible moisture in the air (fog)

Meteors, like lighting are both very fast and unpredictable. The wider area you can cover with the lens the more chances of actually catching the event.

Here is my one and only shot of lighting. I got it at Reno Fernley race track just east of Reno.


That storm turned into one of the most stunning sunsets I've ever seen

It had a sunset double rainbow as well.
