Screw the ipad. There were over 100 tablets announced at CES this year. Most of them are dual core hotness. Apple will soon stop using retina display, they are purchasing super AMOLED+ screens from Samsung now.
iPad 2 is out!

People actually buy these piles of shit at retail? My mom bought one on ebay for $130 bucks and its best use so far looks to be as a frisbee

Obviously we have some folks in here who are jelly of those with tablets!
My goal in life is to be able to carry around a magazine sized full feature computer to do absolutely everything and that time is nearing. Once we get a real selection of tablets and the market starts to get flooded with them (like Android phones), then the need for netbooks will vanish (like Jobs said, but strangely enough, not because of him directly) and the only real need for a larger device like a laptop will be for commercial/business use or advanced hardware. Eventually, everything will be tiny and hot swapable and highly portable. The new way to custom your tablet will be to buy bluetooth keyboards and mice kind of like how it is today, just with options and better tech. Mark my words.
Examples: Went on a road trip to Hotlanta last weekend. In the car, I felt the need to listen to Ratatat. Pulled my Android phone out on Verizon, and googled the album. Downloaded it from rapidshare in about 15 minutes. Opened with an open source Zip app, extracted it to my REMOVABLE MEMORY folder for music that I created, and hit the fucking play button. You couldnt do any of that on a stock iPad. And even with a rooted one, its a fucking challenge.
We will be consumed by two devices in the future. Cell phone, and tablet. Tablet will replace the laptop and the cell phone will essentially become an accessory or means of data, much like RIM has predicted and implemented with their Playbook.
Much further in the future, my prediction is that cell phones will use screen that are flexible and can be opened in multiple directions and customizable. Thus combining the cell phone and tablet into 1.
Much much much further in the future: The cellphone/tablet device will be so advanced it will use biometrics n shit and it will be stored in our bodies. We will use sunglasses for the display and use our minds to advance the resolution as we see it in our thoughts. Full 3D biometric computing. Full rooting into your own brains file storage. We can even begin to index and delete our own thoughts using metadata.
FUCK YEAH FUTURE

Smartphones will soon completely replace wallets, methinks. They will take care of all payment, identification and memberships.
Eg. Want to buy something at Costco? Your phone will identify you, verify your Costco membership at the door and download the appropriate coupons. It then serves as an interactive shopping list, providing information on products and store specials while you shop. It can even display information from your digital refrigerator at home on what you need and what you will need soon. Once you get to the counter you directly pay with your phone, collecting air miles and automatically updating the monthly budget you set up with the push of a button. Head out to your car, which your phone unlocks and starts automatically for you, load up your groceries and hop in. Hit "home" on your phone GPS to get live traffic updates, instantly connect to your car stereo via bluetooth for phonecalls and music and you're on your way.
The crazy thing is all of the above is already available; it just takes some time for people to become comfortable enough that it's the norm.Last edited by Raxe; 03-02-2011, 11:13 PM.Comment

I think in that time period this will be a feasible option but not the majority.
Tablet vs laptop is an interesting debate. Exciting to see where things are going, but I'm already getting frustrated with all the options!Originally posted by z31maniacI just hate everyone.

Yup I am a fanboy, I'll admit it. And I totally know I will look like a dbag in public. Oh well... hah, the public can kiss my ass. The only reason I dont use my iphone4 for 80% of what I normally do on a computer, is b/c the screen is too small. I've been itching for an ipad for a year now. When I need to do work, I'll use a computer. Apart from that, the Ipad/Iphone does everything better for me. Now... hopefully I can mod the cover to match my e30's interior, and I'm set.E30 Dinan Turbo

Damn. I was just writing that I'd prefer something running Windows, when my PC crashed. Irony...
Anyway - in short. Took from work Inspiron Duo for 1 week testing and in my opinion it's great. Ok - heavier, thicker than iPad, and touchscreen does not work as perfect as on apple products, but i must say it's a great device. Tablet whenever I need one, and netbook when I need a keyboard (touch screen keyboards just don't work for me).

Well, you don't have to be crazy to use these as business solution for IT dept. but it would help ;)
It all comes down to expectations. The difficulty with reviews of this thing is that there is not much solutions out there to compare it with. If you compare it to any tablet - to heavy, to thick. Compare it to netbook - to heavy, to thick AND small screen for such chassis.
Look at it from another point of view - it's somewhere in the middle, catching advantages of netbook and tablet, but also sharing some shortcomings of both...

The real issue here is that my boss reads Engadget and then jerks off to their words. He bailed as soon as he read any negativity.

Is this the best instructions on how to do that? How problem-prone is the process?
