1+ I got the chance to ride is Denis' aka Dude8383 e30/m50swap and it was amazing.

        why was it overheating?

I probably have 15 miles on my swap and paired with a m coupe lsd, it isn't that hard to get sideways. Even with the m52. I would also say if you have the opportunity, buy a whole e36. I bought a 328i convertible with only 61k on the engine. There is a difference between 61k and 128k.

m50 non vanos is obviously the cheapest.

I was hearing conflicting stories regarding that. I myself, at first instinct, thought that obviously, the M50NV would be cheapest. However, I started hearing that the S50 was just as cheap, if not cheaper for some sort of technicality(s), such as the M50NV was more sought after for not having vanos.

Regardless, I appreciate the incoming information regarding these motors, and I feel that will further educate my ultimate decision.

I got to go for a ride in a Camero that is owned by my Uncles friend. Puts down high 10s and low-mid 9s with the slicks. I got to watch it at the drags when I was younger and rode with the street tires. Now it just sits in a garage doing nothing. I think that is because it gets 4mpg xD Note: It was amazing when he hammered the gas and said to try and reach the dashboard...could not even lift my head that far from the rest.

So I have been in some very fast cars, but never owned any of my own.

To the OP save for a nice S50 swap unless a cheap M5x comes into grasp.

250 horsepower in a 2800 pound car will get you in trouble.

                      an 06 325i will run mid-high 14's at ~94. That's exactly what my m50 e30 runs (before the cams).

My Dad's 06 325i feels kinda slow, but it's just because it's so isolated and smooth. It would be door to door with my e30, which to me feels pretty quick.
