Ive researched and came up with this:

    1: t-5 swap
2: m46 4 speed with electric over drive
    3: m47 II 5 speed

    volvo... lol

tb is usually the best place to find answers for that, to be honest. if it was newer, VS or SS. As I understand, most of the guys stick with the M46. I could be wrong though, I'm a FWD whore. ;) 855 and s70 owner.

      t-5 really?
If you go t-5 make sure it's the world class t-5 much stornger and better grearing
      than the reg t-5

Or you could spend alittle more and go for the t-56 6psd

      good luck :-D

If you're planning any clutch dumps, pay up for the T-5. If you don't abuse it a post 88+ M47 should be fine. The M46 is stronger but also much heavier, older and the OD is possibly worn. I think your 91 should have LH2.4 or higher so make sure you get the correct late style flywheel with the timing windows. Actually check to see if you have a crank sensor. I'm not 100% on that. You're only source for parts is the JY. The vast majority of manuals came in 240s so you'll need to find a 740 for the correct shifter linkage, pedals and front half of the driveshaf. Some people have welded up their own linkage to make it work in the 740/940.
I did an M47 swap on our 89 240 about 5 years ago. I think I spent about $400 on it including a new clutch. GF crashed it 3 months later. Moved on from RWD volvos. And yes TB is useless but its pretty good for search.
        good luck
