If you want to hunt 7mm mag. would be great good all around rifle but expensive to shoot. $50+ for a box of ammo. But for a starter I do with a .243 It will take down almost all deer.

I've had a .22 since I turned 15 and its a great for tarket practice and just a general good gun to learn on. Once I turned 18 I went out and bought an SKS for less then 300 bucks. Fantastic gun for the cheap.

Saving my cash up now for an 1911 for when I turn 21.

Target practice requires actual SKILL, a grouping of 12" is considered amazing...at 10 yards. Anymore than 30 feet having all the rounds actually HIT the target is impressive!

22s are the shit. really cheap ammo, and the low reacoil reall helps when you're learning to shoot.

At 50 yards I could blow clays off of a berm.

IF you want home defense, get a handgun or shotgun. Think about it, you're not going to be long range shooting intruders. It's gonna be close up. A .22 won't fend off a determined intruder.

Since you can't legally buy a handgun. I'd get s shotgun. Siaga 12 for me. 12 gauge with the action of an AK-47 = done. Grab some slugs and let 'er rip. <-- only a lot better.
