I made my suggestions, but hopefully you weren't taking my shotgun suggestion into thought for hunting deer lol. I suggested a .22 bolt gun over the 10/22 though either will be fun, I've had both and I parted ways with my 10/22 a while ago and don't feel any remorse... I have a lot of shotguns, and for a first one that's not a single shot, the Remington 870 Express is a GREAT pick...

.40 is a compromise cartridge... Most people prefer 9mm or .45 (I know some will argue it, I don't care..). 9mm you get more rounds, .45 you get more knockdown... He's too young for a pistol anyway he said, unless there's loopholes for wherever he lives. He's new to guns in general... .22 bolt gun or a 10/22 even should provide a good bit of entertainment and he can hone gun handling skills, accuracy, basics, etc. etc. etc.... If he wants to hunt, birds are a good start because it's cheaper and easier to get into bird hunting than big game hunting. A shotgun can be used to hunt birds, shoot clays, shoot random crap, and build skills etc. like the .22 will while actually kicking him in the shoulder a little bit.

I am quite serious, went out and unloaded 30 7.62's into a bowling pin. Best rush of awesomeness I've ever felt. Then came the 357 revolver which was quite a bit less rough then the ak, I was surprised at it's tranquility. Much less kick then I expected. Then I shot a 9mm glock didn't like it at all very odd feeling. Wasn't smooth at all.

I know quite a bit about firearms. I own a 12g mossberg 500 with the shell holder and pistol grip for home defense.

Shotgun ammo isn't really bad at all. It used to be dirt dirt cheap, but it's up to maybe like what, $6 a box??? That's a total guess, I haven't had to buy shotgun ammo in years... Bought several cases long ago.

I'd also suggest going back into the gun thread with questions. Don't need to abandon this thread, but ask in the Gun Thread too where most of the gun enthusiasts will see it. It's a discussion thread too..

He said he's never shot a gun before though and if I remember right he said he had a limited budget in the gun thread... He is thinking target shooting, hunting, and home protection? The 870 will fulfill all that to a point.. It's a great hunting shotgun, you can shoot clays all day long, and it's a bit bulky and big for home defense, but it's better than nothing...

.22 has become the staple, I wish I had gotten mine sooner. He's too young to buy a pistol and an AK doesn't fit any of the catagories he's mentioned.... I suggested sticking to the gun thread because people will actually look at what he's asking and make proper suggestions

^^^ Hunt either Grizzley's or Polar Bears with an AK and you might be done. The AK has it's uses beyond the original intention of killing off droves of Capitalists. For my first firearm (bought about a month ago), was a Stag Arms Model 2 AR-15 .223/5.56. Incredibly fun to shoot but burns a nice hole in your pocket for both the gun and rounds. Gun was 950 with taxes and all that bullshit. Ammo around here is $10 for 20 rounds.



If you want something cheap to shoot and fun, definitely go with the M&P15 .22lr like said above.

To learn the basics and not spend a ton of money? .22 rifle. Walk before you run.
