My first firearm was a K98 Mauser. Very nice rifle, very accurate. Used to be cheap to shoot too back when surplus ammo was plentiful. You just had to be very very good about cleaning it after firing.
I have also had/have an SKS, Swiss K-31, AK-47, AR-15, Moisin-Nagant (several versions), Enfield, Mossburg 12 Gauge, a couple 30-30's and a 30.06. - Those are just the long guns.
Hand guns have been few - M9 9mm, Hi-Point 9mm, Ruger P95 DAO, Kimber Custom II, Glock 21, and probably a few I'm forgetting offhand.
If you've never fired a weapon before, a Ruger 10-22 is a good one to start with. Cheap to buy, cheap ammo, and good for learning. Always a fun plinker even after getting the bigger caliber stuff.Comment

Go rent and borrow some guns to see what you like/think.
I'd say go Pellet or .22 to start.. before long you'll have a few!
I just picked up a nice German Pellet gun to teach my son and we'll probably keep it forever. Shooting it in the city limits it great!
.22 cal rifles come in all shapes and sizes too.. so you can have a bolt action classic, semi rifle or an AR-15 replica that might all qualify in your state for 18yo+. Plus like they have said .22 rounds are CHEAP! ..and the key is to be able to shoot it not for it to sit in the closet! booo. :)Comment

I seriously need to get a 9mm or a .22, .45 isn't cheap and my accuracy is still not very good.1985 M10b18. 70maybewhpoffury. Over engineered S50b30 murica BBQ swap in progress.

a 10/22 is the logical choice here, but then again there is nothing wrong with a Mosin, it is a good place to start if you want to shoot a full size cartridge. get oen while there still cheap. ammo is also reltively afforible, @$80 for a 440rnd surplus can. (147grn)
what i do not get is everyone says they recoil like hell, but mine don't. i dotn even notice the recoil. I can shoot all afternoon, and feel nothing.Comment

get a Ruger .22 12 round revolver, i shot one a while back, very fun to shoot :) and .22 cal ammo is waaaaaaaaaay cheaper as previously stated... plus 12 rounds in a revolver gives you more ammo to spray in case of emergency ;)Comment

Just know a lot more about guns than moast. Mr sleeve know his shit as well.
Sure I hunt with my yugo m70b1 and my bulgy 74 by the way is a aswome rifle I can pop ground squirrels all day long out to 90+ yards with Irons. But that not practical. But I dont see anything wrong with a .22. They just get boring. But you can find some good used tube guns for around 80-100 at gunshows. Buy one and buy a real bolt action. 243 or somthin.
An theres no way I list all that I own I dont need the feds going to my house looking for them even though there out of state. The ones that made me lol the most what the hk416 comment theres no way anyone can even own on its a military weapon only and nothing special.
