      Don't discredit the Japanese manufacturers' ability to build enthusiast cars. The Hakosuka Skyline, AE86, S600, older Celicas, 240SX, the Skyline GTR, Miata's, S2000's.. I could go on and on.

      I think over the past decade or two, many carmakers have focused more on building driving appliances. BMW is not immune to it. But that doesn't stop me from getting excited over a select few models and, of course, older cars.

      So much euro-elitism ITT.

        European "build quality" is fast going the way of the dodo bird. Its all about bottom line. Its not in their financial interest to build a car thats a tank and lasts 30 years because those people wont be back to buy/trade-in for another car. They need you coming back. They (most european automakers) build cars to last through warranty. Its as plain as day and anyone who doesnt believe that is a fool and hasnt been involved with dealerships, or independent shops. They used to over-engineer cars. (E28/E12/E30 and earlier anyone?) Now they put tons of frivelous "technology" and electronics in them that is more shit that will break quite soon so that they can charge to fix all that shit out of warranty. If only the car buying public would simply desire for their car to be a reliable, possibly-entertaining, dependable people carrier and mode of transport instead of them needing it to talk to you while it gently massages your anal muscles while making you coffee and giving you fucking directions we'd be in a better spot. BMW was once a luxurious sporting car, now its more of a sporting luxury car. But weve beat this horse to absolute death and i already know that what we (E30 enthusiasts who are NOT in their customer base) think doesnt matter to them. Its just my opinion and Ive come to terms with it. Just enjoy what we have now and be thankful that they did produce such badass machinery. They are, after all, businesses.

          Agreed. I've worked on the newer BMW stuff, feels like you're working on a late model GM product.

                  Yeah... +another one.

                  American cars went south in the 70's. Euro cars in the (end of) 80's. Jap/asian cars in the 90s.

                  I don't know of any car made in the last 5/10 years that will make it 20+ years without major issue...

                    + Eleventy billion.

                    Yes, there are a lot of lame FWD econo-boxes coming from Japan but at the same time those manufacturers are still bringing out, or once brought out epic RWD, performance/handling oriented cars suited to track and hills duties.

                    Honda is probably the worst of the Japanese manufacturers though. They make good engines, then ruin their potential by putting them in FWD shopping trolleys. S2000 and NSX are really the only Hondas worth owning and for their price(in Aus) you could buy something much better.

                    AE86 = Japanese E30 318is.

                    Coming from someone who owns an AE86, E30, Volvo 242GT and FWD 3rd Gen Prelude as a daily.
