I had to buy my first car in college for $700. It was a Mazda Protege. Was it cool? No. Did I have a car? Yes. Did it make me happy? Yes.

Paseos are definitely gay... Classic Celicas are awesome though. I never would have even considered a Japanese car until I bought my old '84 Toyota pickup. That thing has been unbelievably awesome. Gets a "fast pass" on the emission test every year despite having 250,000 miles on the original engine... still has a carb too. Never falters, never changes... just keeps going and going and going. Gets about 27mpg too! I'd love to stuff a 7m-gte or a 1jz into it at some point... sleeper mini truck.'88 528e /// '88 M5 /// '89 951 /// '98 E430 /// '02 M5

The 2 door was made as an Australian and US model only, from '92 to '96 ('93 to '97 in AUS)
Also odd that as common as these cars are here (SO damn many here in Seattle area) the were a flop back home in Japan.
