I had family in Laveen, AZ right outside Phoenix. They sold a few years back and moved to Vegas. The new owners are probably down 400K or so. But seemed like a decent place, it had nearby conviences but still not too close to the big city.

Phoenix isn't the only place to live in AZ. I'm an hour north of Phoenix, and we get 4 seasons here. Winters aren't too harsh, it only snows less than a foot at best a few days out of the year. It is dry here, which is great for old bones, but can be bad for allergies as there can be a good bit of dust. Winter wise it gets to be about in the teens on average and the summers barely skim 100 on the hottest days. Housing is cheap here and most living here are retirees, so the job market blows, but that's not an issue for you. Prescott isn't half bad and we do have a superb mountain road 5 minutes out of town. It's also forest here, not desert.

These cities in TX have hardly any of the types you're wanting to avoid.

              Bartonville
              Southlake
              Lantana
              Highland Village
              Flower Mound

You're at least a 30-40 minute drive from the hood (South & East Dallas area).

I was in Prescott Valley last month. It was 105 or so. Small town, seemed ok.

Lol It's quite horrible actually. Prescott is ok but PV is such a slum. It has been warmer than usual this year though.

That's about all there is around here that's nice. The rest are hoodlums in honda's. I can count the number of e30's here on my hand mine included.

my aunt lives in Texas near Austin there's this lake called Lake Travis, great area i would highly recommend living anywhere near that lake!!!
it's very beautiful not too far off(50mins?) from an awesome city and the locals are pretty nice, no redneck's or wangsters, just people with good heads on there shoulders.

You may not know of all of them.

I'd hardly call PV a slum, there are nasty areas but Prescott has those too. Prescott is about 1000 percent prettier, I'll give you that. Living in the county has advantages.

What some of you are missing is that the man wants a winter home. I don't think he wants to see snow at all. That makes Phoenix/Tucson or Vegas the best bets.
