    Epic f*cking fail.

Secondary hard drive in my laptop died today of the Click-O'-Death.

    Lost almost 3,000 Mp3's
Lost over 30 stand-up comedy movies
    Lost 23 full-length movies
Lost ALL of my episodes of Top Gear.

    All I have left is:

136 Mp3's that were on my phone in Winamp.
2 Movies that were still in my downloads folder: Downfall and Half-Baked.
2 Stand-up special still in my downloads folder: Jo Koy
1 Episode of Top Gear, season 3, episode 2 (The M-Cars episode)

I'd downloaded about 147 Mp3's from Amazon, and they won't let you re-download them after the first time, even though you've already paid for them.

I can get half of those Mp3's back just by ripping my own CD's again, about another half of what's left from family, and I'll just re-download the rest. Same with the movies and the stand-up shows (I'm a HUGE stand-up comedy fan), it's just going to be a metric shit-ton of tedious work.

Ouch, now that sucks! It happens only once, but I bet from here on out you'll always keep a backup somewhere (I recommend a removable HD).

Yeah, Amazon is quite adamant about that (and state quite clearly that it's the down-loader's responsibility to archive them. They even recommend burning to CD or storing on an external drive in case such a thing happens).

Which makes sense, this is all my own bed and I'm lying in it.

When I got this second HD, I shifted everything over to the new one, and thought that I had copied instead of cutting it all.

Throw that HDD in the freezer for a few hours. Then see what you can recover. It's worked for me before.

I lost similar except replace the top gear stuff with porn ;D. I lead a simple life now. Didn't care much to do 6 (12) years of work again in 3 months so I FM/ AM/ Pandora music now and netflix movies. Kinda going with the can't take it with you when you die montra.

I really should backup my pictures though, some shit you can't get back.

Still sorry for your loss (I was hopeing for a video from this click though :(@) < eating boob?)
Been with me for 16 years...

I'd say only about half of that was pirated, but that's not the point here.

And there's no saving that HD now. I tried everything, it started clicking as soon as you put power to it. I tried the freezer for a few hours, but I didn't think it was going to work, anyway. So I slammed it into the garage floor about 10 times until the platters became a glittery dust, gave it about 5 good whacks with a 5 lb. sledge, and pissed on it before I hucked it into the dumpster. It was amazing how much better I felt afterward. I went full-blown Office Space on that thing.

Do you have any idea what data recovery like that costs?

You're talking anywhere from about $100-$2k. Data recovery services like that exist for people that lose their entire work history, bookeeping records, etc. It's not feasible for the average consumer.
