Well for a similar reason I now have two 1tb HDD in Raid 1. I still have a external back up for photos incase someone steels my shit.

It is easy this way I don't have to backup it just dose it as soon as you write to the directory. Tell you what though it was a pain in the fucking ass to set up from some reason.

        Lost 23 full-length movies
Lost ALL of my episodes of Top Gear.

        All I have left is:

136 Mp3's that were on my phone in Winamp.
2 Movies that were still in my downloads folder: Downfall and Half-Baked.
2 Stand-up special still in my downloads folder: Jo Koy
1 Episode of Top Gear, season 3, episode 2 (The M-Cars episode)

I'd downloaded about 147 Mp3's from Amazon, and they won't let you re-download them after the first time, even though you've already paid for them.

That sucks Josh. I have always been thinking about getting a storage/backup drive. But I feel like my Mac is invincible! :-|

If only the cost of SSD's would come down, we could all avoid this shit.

This. I think I'm actually going to get a new laptop soon, this has kind of been the final nail in the coffin, this Dell is about 3 years old and showing its age.

the click lock or ziplock whatever its called bag, put it in that, push all the air out and close it then leave the hdd in the freezeer for a fair while. sometimes that helps with the bearings.

ssd's do shit themselves, only heard of it happening (specific incidents) ive been fairly lucky i guess.

i back up most of my stuff to a online hard drive just in case things like this happen.

learned my lesson after about 3 or 4 hard drive crashes

that's kinda the joke, brah. I've been drinking so I can't really remember wtf the joke was, but me and my friend joke about that shit all the time. Like how the biggest problem he had one day was that his iPad wouldn't wirelessly print something. OHNOES lol.

Sucks man. But it happens, best thing you can do is be ready. I've learned the lesson a few times over.

Data recovery services like you said, just aren't reasonable for consumers. I was quoted $1700 for my last dead HD by a data recovery service. Not worth it for what I lost but I was still upset. I forgot about the freezer trick, don't have anything to lose.

If you don't want to do your own backing up with other physical drives the best service I've found is Crashplan. It's CHEAP, when compared to many services.

What else? It beats Carbonite and everything else I've found. I'm probably going to get the family plan once my home office is setup so I can add as many computers as I need. I thought about going with Carbonite but when I went to their Facebook profile I was a little shocked, way too many unhappy customers to count and people on there were actually telling the unhappy people to switch to Crashplan saying it was better.

CrashPlan provides data resiliency through secure, scalable, and comprehensive backup solutions. We help organizations recover from worst-case scenarios.

                          Get something like this...

We’re sorry, but this page does not existing. Please visit our home page for more information.

Put a couple large drives in it, plug it into your home network and run backups to it.

Or you could go cloud everything; music, pictures, data, etc..

You're talking anywhere from about $100-$2k. Data recovery services like that exist for people that lose their entire work history, bookeeping records, etc. It's not feasible for the average consumer.
We had this happen at work and we got a local computer shop to do the data recovery... $300 including the new hard-drive. It worked perfectly.

It all depends on what your time is worth.

SSD's are less reliable then conventional drives.

AND this is why I'm moving back to buying CD's, Blu-ray/DVD, and burning whatever torrents I download.

I had some music in my parents old dell before I got a laptop and when I tried to activate my iTunes on my new laptop for some reason it would not let me import the music from the old computer.

I then called apple's customer service and was told I could either suck it up and purchase the music again or pay someone to come to my house and troubleshoot the pc but since it wasn't an apple computer they did not guarantee anything.

So now I just went back to my town's small music stores and started ordering physical CDs again feels good to pay money and get something I can see and hold in my hand again.
