That sucks. At least you got some of it back. Good luck with the next one.

I was absolutely shattered when my Toshiba Notebook hard drive got the click of death. Not so much for my media but for my own work. Now, everything is backed up on externals. :)

When my Toshiba Satelite died on the 2nd replacement HD I almost cried as it had all my semester work
            Due to be handed in.

I got ahold of a program that is called Mini XP it runs at start up and opens in a sort of windows 95 way via a cd program, even though Windows was FBUR'd I was slowly able to retrieve all my data. That may be an avenue for you?

Well, it was the dreaded click of death, so as far as I'm aware the data on the hard drive is gone.

It was last year, anyway. Pretty sure I went Office Space on that notebook, lol.

My more or less simple and cheap solution to this common problem:

I have 2x 1TB Seagate externals that were obtained for 200 total. I use them for storing all my movies, tv shows, music, pictures, work, school and then about once a month (or sooner if I just added a bunch of shit) I back it up to the other one. So, for a whopping $200, I can store just about everything I have and keep it backed up safely. If one fails, I get another and do the same. The odds that they both fail together are so small, its like Justin Beibers penis.

Anyways, I also got a free ghetto ass used server with a 500GB drive on it, so I use that also.
                  Just my .02
