I'm with Sleeve. My wife is a mechanical engineer, I never went to college. She stays home, I have a pretty successful career in a niche sales job in high-tech. I make good money, but she drives a '95 Volvo. We live in a 1400 sq. ft. house and don't have a 90 inch TV and the latest whatchamablowit. My 3 year old wears hand me down clothes. His little brother due in 2 months will also wear hand me downs. We own a bunch of rental property, generally have a good time, and are saving plenty of money for retirement.

I know so many people in my income bracket with even more money coming from a spouse's job who tell me they "wish they had" our money. Those comments piss me off. Problem is that they buy the marketing hook line and sinker that says they "need" or "deserve" certain things at a certain income level and go out and commit themselves to a monthly payment. Next thing you know you need to clear $6-8K/mo to cover the nut and haven't bought groceries. No thanks.

              Stay at home wife here.

As mentioned above, I would much prefer her to raise our child than a stranger. We also do this on an income that many would say is not enough to provide for an entire family.

Our secret? 2 cars. 2005 Sunfire, paid off. 1993 Trooper, obviously paid off. We are penny pinchers. Still manage to put away money at the end of each month after paying all the bills.

I wouldn't have it any other way.

ETA: She does work on Friday and Saturdays, but Grandma is the baby sitter for those 2 days while she works.
