The of reasons the US is the economic power it is today is that it was one of the few if any nations involved in WW2 that wasn't attacked on it's own soil.

Its industry kept going during and after the war. There was no years of rebuilding going on.

Both arguments are idiotic but the 'you'd be speaking German' is the most idiot. It's not like the US joined the war because they felt like jumping in and helping out for some great humanitarian ideal.

Just like we (the British) didn't jump in to help the French and the Belgians until later on when it looked like the Germans were a serious threat to us.

Rob you know very well that the damage done to Pearl Harbor couldn't hold a candle to the near total destruction of other countries in WWII.

I don't consider a Naval Base 4k Km from the US in the same catagory as a city in your own country. Hell Hawaii wasn't even a state till '59. Just like Alaska is US territory I wouldn't consider it really part of the states if it was attacked.

No, it was about something completely different.
It was about, that if any european dares to point a finger at the US the traditional "you'd be speaking german" statement is bound to come up.

this is the internet, a thread hangs around for longer than a day and it gets hyjacked many times over. ;)

Minor point, Alaska was attacked during WWII. Japan had control of at least one of the Aleutian Islands for a while.

Fires were also started in the northwest by bombs carried over by weatherballoons.

                        lifeboat ethics.

                        a) feed them and kill ourselves with overpopulation?

                        b) let them die and let our poor morals ache.

                        alturistic option c) teach them.

so WANT to do C but end up doing A when in a survivalist sense it comes down to B.
