I was being completely sarcastic. Land rovers are a terrible idea unless you are an old man and a Brit

They are a wonderful idea if your budget is well north of 3k, and can devote enough time to using them for non mall crawling duties and keeping up with their "quirkiness"

i know rovers first hand. My sister had a discovery, and it was really nice...but maintenance was a bitch. Something was always wrong with it.

Sleeve, I really like the idea of the tahoe or s10 blazer.

XJs are great, but for the lack of power and road/wind noise I'd rather the tahoe or blazer.

I loved my old Toyota 4Runner. Back when Toyota made cars that were not A-B vehicles.

Toyotas are great too! My friend just sold his '03 WRX wagon and bought an ~'89 4Runner. I know he's happy with it.

I was just about to suggest an older 4runner, so I'll just toss my vote in with these guys.

They are fairly expensive even for the old ones, but it's because they are so good. Just look for the least rusty model you can get :P

Thinking the same thing and budget OP. Been looking on Craigslist the past couple days and it looks like 4runners are the best option. Tons for sub $3000 with around 175k and basically just minor body damage. What I would consider perfect for a winter driver. Might need new tires on most of them I've seen though. Last winter I drove a 95 AWD Exploder on bald tires and it stuck like a champ. Think most $3000 Explorers are going to have way too many miles to be reliable though. Good luck with ya searching.

my 99 tahoe has been nearly flawless, other than a few items that puke out at a 100k no complaints. Ride comfy, haul lots of shit, CHEAP to buy Cheep to fix relatively cheep to run. I have had to put about a grand in it in the last year, Front end, Battery, MAF, TPS, and thats about it. Only has a 115k on it but is 12 years old. Its the little womans/our winter DD and our back country rig even though its in really great shape over all for a MI/WI/MT all its life truck.

one with about 135k in good shape thats LS trim you should be able to find for 3500-4k and a little better if it needs a little work and 2500-3000 with more mileage and more in beater condition.

Some good ideas, Cherokee’s are fun and Gm trucks can be good as well, but the answer to all cheap DD truck questions is Toyota, just watch the early 90 3.0V6's for head gasket issues and inspect the frame for rust on all years.

I agree with Mr. S, Full size GM SUV or to a lesser extent Ford FS SUV (Big Broncos are tits) I have a Jeep Wrangler, and although a fun toy, they are not worth a crap for a DD.
for the gas you would burn in a Cherokee sport/ classic, you may as well have a full size. parts are all over for Yukon, suburban, etc. Cops and Gov use em cuz you cant kill them and they are cheap.

watch out for $800 fuel pumps that shit at less than 60,000 KM intrervals on some Chev trucks/SUV's though. that is a kick in the dick. happened on my 04' Silverado Company truck
