    Flower Pot BBQ Smoker

little late in the season, but i've begun building my own bbq smoker out of a huge terra cotta flower pot. basic components are a hot plate, pan, grill rack, terra cotta pot, and some sort of lid (im using a pot base). here's some pics of it in progress, haven't gotten anything cooked yet as im trying to work out some issues.

i do not want flames, cause that'll cook too fast and basically be a grill. i either need to put a regulator for the power to dull it down a bit, or my buddy who runs http://goodsmokebbq.com (shameless plug), said to try to fit a plate with holes in it and a water dish about the flames, and then use charcoal and wood.

here's a shot of the grate idea from ugly drum smokers

i did a test run with the plate just directly plugged in and some applewood (hardwood) in the dish with it closed up... it smoked like hell and the wood began to flame a bit, so i will need to be able to control the heat and maybe have a grate/water dish in there.

has anyone else made anything similar to this? i know a lot of people make em out of 55 gallon drums. looking for some more guidance if anyones built something similar.

here's what it looks like all buttoned up, the thermometer in the side is gonna be sitting in a hole in the top soon.

post test with no grill grate inside. burner cord runs through the hole out the bottom.

lemme know what you think, cant wait to get some pork on this bitch!

My buddy and I were going to do this but then just plunked down the money for a smoker at Lowes. I'm all about the DIY though so hope it works out for you, the reason we stopped was because after like the 10th store looking for a hot plate we just wanted to cook some damn ribs that day.

I think they work better when you place the racks and smoking apparatus on the bottom Terra cotta plate and invert the pot and use the drain hole to adjust the amount of ventilation. The trick is to buy a base for a pot the next size larger...

they say it can be done for 50 bucks... but counting buying everything new, including the bricks, wood fuel, pietin, grill rack etc... probably 80 bucks. i imagine if i was at my rents house id be able to get some of this stuff via scrap laying around/used etc.

Man. I feel so privileged to have any one of 4 different smokers at my disposal. At one house.

                    One's a trailer too....
