little late in the season, but i've begun building my own bbq smoker out of a huge terra cotta flower pot. basic components are a hot plate, pan, grill rack, terra cotta pot, and some sort of lid (im using a pot base). here's some pics of it in progress, haven't gotten anything cooked yet as im trying to work out some issues.
i do not want flames, cause that'll cook too fast and basically be a grill. i either need to put a regulator for the power to dull it down a bit, or my buddy who runs http://goodsmokebbq.com (shameless plug), said to try to fit a plate with holes in it and a water dish about the flames, and then use charcoal and wood.
here's a shot of the grate idea from ugly drum smokers

i did a test run with the plate just directly plugged in and some applewood (hardwood) in the dish with it closed up... it smoked like hell and the wood began to flame a bit, so i will need to be able to control the heat and maybe have a grate/water dish in there.
has anyone else made anything similar to this? i know a lot of people make em out of 55 gallon drums. looking for some more guidance if anyones built something similar.
here's what it looks like all buttoned up, the thermometer in the side is gonna be sitting in a hole in the top soon.

post test with no grill grate inside. burner cord runs through the hole out the bottom.

lemme know what you think, cant wait to get some pork on this bitch!
