        without starting a shit storm...

although I DO see the quality of the MDRs, personally, I think sennheisers and akgs have better vibrance.

          iPod for in the car..

My friend keeps tying to get me to go to Spotify, but not impressed. I like the ability to rate the music, and control the frequency that certain "types" come up, and frankly since my music collection is in the thousands for physical media, and ungodly digitally (I did work in radio for umpteen years) There is very little Spotify has that I don't already.

It would be nice if there was a "discovery mode" you could put it in that would just randomly pop in a new track that is similar to your interests. If there is an easy way to do this in Spotify, I have not found it.

^^These are pretty much "the standard" for radio studios, they are my go-to when I am recording or DJ'ing in clubs or raves back in the day..

I tried to stay away from ipods but they have become the standard it seems. I got 3 ipods as gifts and 1 I bought myself. The headphones they come with aren't the greatest so I typically upgrade them.

I'm Running DoubleTwist and Spotify on my 32GB card on my heavily modded HTC HeroC.

For headphones I have some basic stuff as mp3 and aac quality is mediocre in general and I'm not too picky.

For classical and hi-fi music I run Grado GS1000i's - they are best for classical music so I'm looking into a set of AKGs for regular hifi listening.

next up on the list is a pair or Axiom Audio M22 speakers though...awesome sound for a great price!

                I vehemently hate apple.
But there is no denying they got the iPod right for playing music.
But the Ipod touch and Iphone. Bahh. Fuck iTunes. I'll stick with my older iPod and Winamp thank you very much.

I highly recommend cowon players. I have the j3 and absolutely love it! The sound quality is exceptional and puts most other music players to shame. It's lossless, wave compatible, and as a bonus plays most all video file types.

A couple features I really like-- I can drag and drop music on the fly without having to use any software that bogs my system down, ahem... itunes. Has a customizable equalizer and other sound enhancing settings which if you're a basshead for example, allows you to tweak frequencies to your liking. Even the 10+ preset eq settings it comes with are excellent.

Paired up with my westone um2's and I get eargasm :D

                    b. what? I dont leave music on for other people played on some little portable device. If I am listening to it I have buds in my ears. They have their own shit.

I guess in the incredibly rare occasion I could see your points but I dont want to buy and carry another device for that purpose. I also LOVE having the smartphone for running. It plays music, has an app that tracks my performance and gives me voice prompts and if I have a problem its also a phone. Pretty soon its gonna be my house key and my wallet (Im waiting for the Galaxy Nexus and Schlage is making NFC compatible locks). I could literally run with nothing but headphones and phone. Even stop for food on the way if they took Google Wallet.
I was actually referring to the fact that smart phones pause automatically and resume after the call. For me, the sudden stop is annoying.

of course in the occasions when you are using headphones your phone would be most feasible.
But when you use it in the car....

And great job describing everything an ipod touch does.

                      Using a 6g nano.
It's much nicer to just clip on your sleeve or collar instead of running,
or washing the car or whatever with a phone in my hand.

Having something the size of a gatorade bottle cap vs full face smart phone.

Well I ask for alternatives because I would like to ditch itunes and got to some where else for my music. Basically what really gives me the shits is that if I loose my music I apparently loose all my music. Also I can't connect other devices to itunes. So I though if I am going to change to a different music download manager then I might as well get a mp3 device that is better then the ipod.

That's another reason I'm more of a fan of music on my Android smartphone rather than an Mp3 player with built-in storage is because I can keep all of my music on my SD card. I have a $23 16GB MicroSD in my phone right now, and if my music collection ever breaches that, I'll go to a 32GB card for a whopping $35. I keep it updated with my HD in my laptop, so now it also serves as my backup.

Not sure what your budget is, but take a look at the new android based Samsung galaxy player (released just a few days ago). Haven't heard or played with one yet but will surely give the itouch a run for its money.

                              Product Info

Nonetheless I still highly recommend cowon players.

                                I said it already...

Older Ipod (Anything but an ipod touch and newer)
                                Winamp.
                                Done

Also, I don't carry my ipod. It's specifically for my car, and nowhere else. I have my HTC Inspire for everywhere else. With Pandora. And never needing Itunes.
