iRiver makes the best sounding MP3 players in my experience. But I would just get an iPod Touch. Ubiquity of accessories has value.

and what about those times when you want to carry your phone on you and talk and leave music playing for others or just in the background?

With that being said, I'm no fan of the Apple cult but it gets no better than ipod touch or nano.
          a. any good smartphone pauses the music automatically when you get a call and resumes it after.
          b. what? I dont leave music on for other people played on some little portable device. If I am listening to it I have buds in my ears. They have their own shit.

I guess in the incredibly rare occasion I could see your points but I dont want to buy and carry another device for that purpose. I also LOVE having the smartphone for running. It plays music, has an app that tracks my performance and gives me voice prompts and if I have a problem its also a phone. Pretty soon its gonna be my house key and my wallet (Im waiting for the Galaxy Nexus and Schlage is making NFC compatible locks). I could literally run with nothing but headphones and phone. Even stop for food on the way if they took Google Wallet.
          Im now E30less.

iPhone for Pandora, Spotify and synced music, before that I used my Droid phone. Don't get a Zune, the software will make you want to kick puppies. I actually liked my Zune player a lot and it came with wifi sync like 3-4 years ago but the software is horrible.

                    a. and b. I think he was referring to listening to music in a car or at home or a party, not headphones.

and schlage locks are complete shit. my company sells locks with the same key way. we sell schlage as well and receive RGA's all the time for defective product. I would never buy one, no matter how "state of the art" it may seem. I can break into them with my eyes closed. Buy Emtech or Best Access if you want quality residential security.

I really wouldn't compare the iPod to a smartphone because like some said, it's nice to have a separate device for each. Especially if you're somewhere sharing your music on a stereo or something, it's not a party atmosphere while you pause the entire party's music to talk to someone on the phone.

So maybe just another off brand mp3 player? I just use my iPod classic or laptop if it's feasible.

Basically, yes. Idk who's bright idea it was to bring up the comparison in the first place since the guy asked for an alternative to an iPod, not an iPhone.

I had an iPod, which was eventually replaced by an iPod Touch. Seriously, the iPod touch is an awesome little device. If I wanted a "dedicated" device it would either be the iPod nano (for jogging, or times when I can set up a placelist way ahead of time) or the iPod touch if I want to be able to DV on the fly with ease.

That said, I ended up "replacing" my iPod touch with an iPhone. I hadn't intended to, but that's just the way it plays out. My iPhone has most of my music library, Pandora, and a few other streaming services that are free. Also, smart playlists are the bomb.

I know you wanted iPod alternatives. But I assumed what you really wanted was our opinion on music players, since only a dogmatic fool would ignore a great product just because he doesn't like a few of the people that buy the product :)
