The problem with this is that it's recompressing an already compressed audio stream. The output bitrate is not always equal to the input bitrate. A lot of the time you end up with an mp3 file that has a 320kbps bitrate, but the audio is closer to 128kbps because that's how it was encoded originally.
Then you can get even further aliasing.

You can find most albums in 320kbps or even FLAC sometimes using torrents. I do the youtube thing too but I would rather have a direct rip.

I've never understood torrents. It's the zip files right?

I'll get it off youtube it it's just one song I want or if it's a rare remix or something that's hard to find. A lot of times you can't get torrents for stuff like that and it's much easier to get it off youtube if it's just one song you want.

I'll torrent if it's a whole album that I want.

just much easier/more reliable way (than napster/limewire/etc) to download anything and everything P2P. you generally find full albums vs. song by song

No. A .zip is a type of compressed file.
Torrents are essentially a way of downloading a file. You download a torrent file from a website. This torrent file is small and downloads very fast. That torrent file just contains data on how to get the file you want(say a song for example). You use a program like uTorrent to open that file and it downloads different pieces of the file you want from different people that have it (peers). So it is downloading the pieces of the file you want from other people like you instead of a server. When all the pieces are downloaded then you have your file.

This is the simplest way I can explain it. It's really much easier that it sounds.

This is better than the conventional way you would download a file from a server that you are use to because of several reasons.
First, it is not illegal or much harder to claim as being illegal (blurry) for the website that you get the torrent from so it is now more mainstream.
Second, depending on how large the file is and how many other people are downloading it and are online that have the file (seeders and leechers) , it can download much faster than getting it from a server.

You can think of it working simular to how napster and limefire/frostwire use to work in the sense that you are downloading parts of the file from many other people that have it.(peers)

                iTunes.

What? Someone had to say it :)

I prefer a consistent and high quality sound file without any fuss. That most (all?) of iTunes is now DRM free removed the last obstacle to my downloading experience.

Amazon is a little less smooth, but they do an excellent job as well.

This sounds really good on paper, but imagine this, you go update your iphone 5 and all of a sudden all if not most of your itunes is deleted, That is a decent amount of money down the tubes that Apple will not help you get back. Happen to a decent amount of friends who have downloaded music from itunes.
