I'm only 17 and I've been lucky enough to see many AND drive a fairly built one at autox (thanks Polak!!). They are stupid fun and I am jealous of their owners.

The M3 Conquers the Race Circuit
In 1986, the M3 was developed for racing homologation purposes, with a requisite 5,000 cars for competition in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC). On the track it proved more than competent, winning its debut season of the series over opposition by Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Alfa Romeo, and Volvo. The M3 went on to win the European Touring Car Championship several times, the Tour de Corse rally and the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) twice–for starters. THE M3 WOULD QUICKLY BECOME THE MOST VICTORIOUS RACING CAR OF ALL TIME, RECORDING 1436 VICTORIES IN 1,628 DAYS. - copied from http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...g/History.aspxComment

The truly beautiful thing about the M3 is this: its purity.
There are no nannies other than ABS. The driver has to know what they're doing. That said, a skilled driver can use all the chassis has to offer. The aero aids work, and the car tracks effortlessly above 80. Driving one through the Dragon, the big 4 making all the right sounds at 6k+......heaven....
The torque curve is literally as steep as the Matterhorn with 100hp not showing up until 3300RPM. This car rewards a driver that can play the gearshift and clutch like a virtuoso violinist, rev-matching through the corners to keep the motor on the boil for the exit. Doing it right is instantly rewarding.
You can have the newer M3s. I don't want one though. Never will.
Now excuse me while I slip out to the garage and take a peak under the cover and dream of Summer.Comment

Hi Guys,
For the members who haven't seen one this is my 87 M3 and yes in my mind it is a true performance car and you have only to look at the race wins around the globe to confirm this.
It is a pleasure to own and drive and I intend to keep it in good original condition.
Some people complain about the lack of low down torque which there is not a lot of but the engine is a race engine with a short stroke to allow it to rev hard and win races not drag people off at the lights.
